Track Day
After installing the Baer Eradispeed Brake Rotors this winter and the Hawk ceramic brake pads, I was interested to see how they'd do on the track. I changed the engine oil and added the extra quart. The brake fluid was brand new from my installation. It was an 85F day and the sky was clear.
The BMW Club let me tag along on their track day for a small fee and they were very nice and helpful. Several of them were amazed I was actually going to track a 2004 Commemorative Z06, but I told them, that's what they were designed to do. I even got a nice offer on it from a 335 owner.
I used the competition mode and ran the second fastest lap time of the day, just 2.75 seconds under a supercharged M5 with racing tires. The brakes were great with no fade at all, even on my fifth lap. My only concern was the oil temperature got up to 256F. I think an engine oil cooler will be my next mod. The Goodyear F1s did well, but they are thinning, so I'm going to look for a good street/track tire the end of this summer. These cars are so much fun at the track!!!
Glad to hear that you enjoyed your first track day. 256* oil temp is nothing to worry about. That said, if you're not fading ceramic pads you have plenty of untapped potential in the car and braking system. Once you start pushing harder you'll find that oil temps will rise and the pads will fade. An oil cooler (either dedicated or a combination radiator w/ built-in oil cooler will be beneficial when you run the car harder. I have the Ron Davis combo unit in my street/track car and find that it does a great job of keeping temps down on the track without having to worry about oil temp being too low on the street, which can happen with a dedicated cooler without a thermostat.
