Default Help: Texas Road Trip...

I have a 7 day vacation from work next month, and I'm set on going on a road trip in my Z06. I haven't done a longish road trip in quite awhile, so I decided my destination would be to see my oldest friend who lives in Corpus Christi, TX. Anyways, I would like a little help on planning a loose itinerary for those of you who have done a similar trip, or who live in the TX area.

I'm going solo, and I'm all about 'winging' it, that's typically how 98% of my vacation trips go anyways. It's only a week, possibly squeeze in an extra 2 days if I'm able to. I live in Kansas City, and the route I'm probably going to take is KC to Galveston - Galveston to Corpus - Corpus back to KC (which includes going through San Antonio, Austin, Ft Worth/Dallas). For this trip I'm just focused on seeing the areas mentioned, although I appreciate your opinions of other places, I'll have to save those for another time lol. So, what do ya'll think and what are your opinions while I'm down there?

Also, I wasn't real sure where to post something like this on our forum, so if you have suggestions on that as well, by all means. Thanks in advance!

We just got back from a 3600 mile trip from NC to Houston, then up to Lubbock, TX and back. It was a great trip! Hope you find some terrific roads and enjoy the drive. We tried to stay off main highways and looked for the smaller roads. That's where a map comes in unless your GPS will select "alternate routes". HAVE FUN!!!!!

Very good suggestion.

Having lived in Central Texas all my life I can attest to the quality of the secondary roads that provide great scenery and less traffic hassle as well. Many times the longer "scenic" routes are faster because of the heavy interstate NAFTA traffic commuting between Mexico and points farther north of Texas.

Enjoy your trip, the weather is good for driving at this time of the year, wave when you pass by Sun City.

Sounds like a fun trip except for the Texas part. There is a toll road if between Austin and San Antonia that has a 85mph speed limit. I drove my Z down to Austin from Aurora, Co to my company hq and worked a couple of weeks before I went to the F1 race. Went on a field trip and drove from Seguine to Austin on it. It took my wife 6 tries to get a picture of a speed limit sign because of the speed. It was a lot of fun.

Haven't been to Texas for many years so can't help you much on what to see, but have a safe trip. Sounds like a lot of fun.

The Stockyards in FW are a must see. Lots to see and do in Dallas too. Depending on if you want to stop for sites or food.. could give suggestions on both. San Antonio is a great stop too. The Riverwalk area is great.

In my short time living here in San Antonio I have realized that, 1. people have NO IDEA how to drive properly in this city and, 2. there is usually only 1 way to get between the major cities. You will be spending much of your time on I35 south through to SA then 37 south to Corpus. Once you are on 37 the scenery goes bye bye.

I know its not much help but those are my findings from the last 3 years. Good luck on your trip.

Thanks for your help so far! I love the idea of the smaller roads once I get down there, I don't have GPS (*gasp* lol I know, how un-American of me, huh) so do you recommend a specific map, or will any do fine, any roads specifically that you recommend? Yes, I like the suggestions you've given me, my only definite plan is to see my friend for a couple days, but that's it, everything else is what I'm asking help on lol. Oh, and I for sure want to swing by Galveston to check it out. But otherwise, 'let me have it'!

The Alamo, and swing by the River walk in San Antonio. Stockyards in Ft Worth. What/where else? Any local 'have-to' restaurants? How long could I spend, where? Thanks again!

Recently took a 6,500 mile road trip. Drove I-10 across Texas. San Antonio is a must. Also, check out this site for unique and scenic road recommendations. http://www.motorcycleroads.com/

Since you will be in Corpus Christi, Port Aransas is only a bridge away. I'd recommend a day on the beach there followed by some seafood that was caught that day - several good restaurants that can accomplish that.

Besides all of the normal sights, if you go through San Antonio make a stop at Taco Taco. It's awesome and was featured on the Travel Channel. Most of the restaurants on the River Walk are so-so. They are trying to make a buck off tourists so they don't care about repeat business. Take a little drive over to Taco Taco. It's that good.

If you come up through Austin, The Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood is great.

Even better would be taking your Corvette on a blast through the hill country West of the city (that's where we go to play) and stop at Coopers BBQ in Llano. The Hill Country West of Austin offers a lot of twisty roads with light traffic and some key straightaways.

In downtown Dallas I like the Y.O Ranch Steakhouse. It's in the historic district within walking distance of the 6th Floor Museum.

Stockyards I hit the H3 Ranch.

Alot of the alternate roads in Texas are nice as long as they are cared for. I've scraped a couple times while going down back roads, but was worth it anyway! And yea feel free to stop around Georgetown, there are some nice folks around here

Coopers is a must STOP for great BBQ and 1 1/2 thick pork chops!!! Check with area clubs and see where they take there road trips. Also go onto the SW Regional and list your questions,Cajundude@englandgreen he organizes trips around H-town. OVRKL (forum name)(Chris is his real name) in Katy has done road trips in the hill country. Too bad your not making this trip later, you could do JETTS and VETTES on the Lex. Park your car on the USS Lexington aircraft carrier to raise money for the wounded warrior fund. Good luck, have fun,and be safe. L8R ZFLASH

For the trip down, you might consider going through the Ozark Mountains instead of across Oklahoma.
