[Z06] Should I or shouldn't I:
Hi. My name is Gary, I am new to this forum, which I think is great, by the way, and I am interested in everybody's opinion. I am seriously considering purchasing a new 2002 Z06 for a weekend toy and / or occasional driver, and I am starting to wonder about the number of quality issues that seem apparent, and customer satisfaction when they are taken to the dealer's for repair. Are there any of you who have had serious regrets that you purchased a Z06. Any and all comments will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the CorvetteForum, Gary. :yesnod: This is a great place to hang around with folks who know and love the only sports car that matters. :)
I'll let some of the members who have first-hand experience with the '02 ZO6 wade in with the specifics, but I can't imagine that you'd regret the purchase of a ZO6. It's an awesome car.
As to dealer issues, it depends. There are very good dealers and really sorry ones. Chevy is aware of that situation and I've heard Will Cooksey say he's more than willing to have his folks at the Assembly Plant work with a dealer to help them resolve issues with customers.
He said he has even sent his folks to a local dealership to deal with problems that the local folks couldn't deal with.

Gary, do it!
I've had my '02 Z06 since last Sept. The car is GREAT! Hmmm... maybe that word is a little strong... let me try a few others out: AMAZING, FANTASTIC, AWESOME, INCREDIBLE, WONDERFUL, SWEET, TERRIFIC.
There, that sums it up a bit better. Don't be swayed by the negative posts. If you base your decision on a bias caused by a few negative posts and let that sway you... well... let me put it another way. GET ONE. OWN IT. DRIVE IT. Then you'll tell yourself you were NUCKING FUTS not to get one sooner. :) :)
People usually don't post when everything works and they are happy - well, not that many that is compared to when something goes wrong. For every poster that complains and/or has problems, there are probably hundreds of owners out there with zero problems. (Like me!)
I have had NO regrets whatsoever. It is the best car I have ever owned - also the fastest, quickest, and most fun to drive. :)

Although no car is perfect, I have absolutely NO complaints on my 2002 Z06. I have about 6000 miles and have had no issues. It seems that some have had a few problems...but as you may know the saying "treat a customer right and he will tell no one, but treat him wrong and he will tell everyone".
I love my car- it is fast, handles like a dream, gets great mileage and looks beautiful! Who can ask for anything more?
Welcome to the forum, Gary. I've had no regrets and no problems after almost 7500 miles. The car has never been to the dealer. Miles and miles of smiles. Go for it.
I have had my 2002 for 1 month and 1200 miles.
Since day one I have had a shimmy in the steering wheel at 65mph+, I have had it back to the dealer and they balanced the tires...still there, going back again.
The parking brake would not hold the car on hills...this has been corrected.
There was damage to the rear window trim...they have ordered a new piece.
There is melted paint around the front passenger headlight...they offered to paint the bumper :( (did not notice this until two days after I got it)
There is damage to the carpet by the left hand passenger seat bracket...they are having this repaired.
Overall, this is the most trouble I have ever had with a brand new (50k) car. The dealer sales and finance people are the most incompetant I have ever dealt with. The service department seems decent,so far we will see if they can fix the other problems.
This is the first domestic vehicle I have ever bought, and it has sure left a bad taste in my mouth. I am soo glad that I leased the car and will be able to give it back...after paying 34,999 in lease payments (GRRRRR)
I do love this car though, power, handling, looks....its all there, and if I can get the steering whell shimmy fixed, I will be mostly pleased with it.
Thats my .02

Argetni,
For the shimmy, have you found someone who can do a road force variance test on it? Went through same siuation with 01 Eclipse Convertible. They found the road force on one side of the tire was 20 pound greater than the other. Turn out to be sidewall failure on the tire.
Just my .02

Gary, mine is 5 weeks old and had one annoying manufacturing problem where the rear axle boot was leaking grease and had to be replaced under warranty. This was frustrating because I couldn't drive the car for 6 days including over a weekend. The dealer did end up downing a car in their inventory to get a part and get me back on the road.
The fit and finish is not up to Lexus, Mercedes or BMW but the performance of the car is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Nothing under $70,000 can compare.
And the car looks amazing when you use zaino car polish on it. Just absolutely stunning. So bottom line, I personally would find it tough as a daily driver coming from Lexus quality and service but as a weekend toy you can't beat it! Any car that can do 0-100 in under 10 seconds right from the factory deserves a little slack in my book.
Bottom line, supermodels are usually a bit more of a handful...Supercars are that way to some extent, but the Z06 compares very favorably when compared to other supercars out there. Almost nothing out there is as fast except for tuner cars that are less reliable than the Vette.
If you want a real performance car, there's no question it represents the best value on the market.

My car has had no problems up to now (with about 15,000 miles).
I could never imagine having a car as a weekend toy. I drive mine when I can weatherwise (we had 310 inches of snow this past winter), and when I am not riding my motorcycle.

I've has my '02 Z06 for about one year and have put 4000 miles on it, with at least 25% of those miles on road racing courses. The car has been driven very hard and thus far has been rock solid. The only problem I experienced was a defective battery that was replaced under warranty. I don't think it's possible to have more performance fun for the money.
For sure the car doesn't have the fit and finish of other cars that you could buy for about $50,000, most notably the BMW M3. That said, I wouldn't confuse a lower level of fit and finish with the car being "less reliable".
