Today I went across town to pay a bill. came out jumped in the car and noticed I couldnt see the HUD. I checked the switch, it was up. turned a corner into shaded area and then I could see it, happened again tonight after work. Is it getting ready to go out? I heard it is like 3500 to replace.
My Guess would just be the way the Sun is reflecting off the window, does anything at all show on the glass? Cost to replace if you do it yourself is no where near that price.
It's not very difficult to replace the projector, just takes a little time, you can find tons of info on the subject online, the projectors are reasonable.

If it happens again, take note of the sun's position - it can fade out the HUD display under the right conditions. If it does it when it is not sunny, then you definitely have another issue and it may require replacement of some parts. The link provided by toque is a good one. But, if you end up having to replace the parts to make it work, get with Gene at gmpartshouse.com - he has a package deal on the HUD components and it is very reasonable in price.
