I'm considering using a 1.25 amp Batterytender while storing my 2001 during the winter. Has anyone had any issues with them or heard of any. I am thinking of fires, etc.
In the past I have either disconnected the black cable or started it once a month and let it run for around 15 minutes and moved it a foot or so.
Thanks for ant insight on winter storage!
The Battery Tender "Smart Tender" is the best way to go. I have 4 of them and have used them successfully on several vehicles, cars, motorcycles and lawn tractors. They will not only keep your battery charged they will extend battery life.
Mine is a 1.5 amp from Advance Auto Parts. I've never had a problem with it overheating or otherwise malfunctioning. Other forum members have their favorite brands and I'm sure they will add their posts.
Mine's from NAPA and is installed permanently next to the battery (previous owner did it). I use it all winter when the car's not being driven, and use it in the summer too when I know I may not drive the car for a couple of days.
I have an attached garage, as well as an aversion to fires. I store my C-5, as well as a couple of other "family fleeters", during the winter. Every 7-10 days, usually when I'm outside with the snowblower, I hook up my regular battery charger, set at 10 amps, for about 20-25 minutes. So far, meaning the last 25 years or so, I've had no issues.
I've been using Battery Tender Plus units for many years on everything from lawnmower, motorcycle, travel trailer, Corvette batteries, etc. I have the "eyelet" BTP connectors mounted on the front posts of the Corvette battery and if I'm not going to be driving it for a more than a week, it's plugged in.
And they've all been on BTP's for winter storage. The question isn't if you should use one it's; why haven't you been using them?
for winter storage on my "summer drivers" for 10+ years without an issue. On cars that I rarely drive, I permanently installed them for easy of use (plug-n-park). Since my C5 is only stored Thanksgiving-Easter, I place the charger on top of the battery temporarily and route an extension cord out the corner of the hood and over the side view mirror during winter storage.
Do most of you guys just clip onto the battery terminals, or do you connect the two-way plug onto the fusebox and ground? I have even seen a cigarette lighter connection. Any thoughts about what is best?
Thanks,
John
Clip onto the terminals for me. Do whatever works for you - just use it!
Peter
I did have the ring setup attached to the front posts but switched to the clips. No particular reason - juste didn't care for the looks with the hood open.
I have been using a different Schumacher 1.5 amp maintainer for a few years and it has been good. It has a desulfation mode that actually brought back one of my batteries that I thought was terminal.

I just bought and installed this exact one the other day. Glad to hear you like it, because it was so cheap i was concerned. I had a 1214 code come up and thought I'd give a charger a try before I send my EBCM off to absfixer. Will finally have good weather tomorrow and will see if it helped.
