Default "Tune" trade-offs ?

What are the trade-offs for a performance tune?

My understanding is a good one reduces operating temperatures, and make the car perform better. So what is the sacrifice? If there isn't one, then why didn't they just put more performance in them from the factory?

I don't think there are any trade offs, you might loose MPG's because your foot will be into it more because it is a lot of fun to drive. GM puts a ton of Torque management into these cars and you can have it removed(really wakes the car up). I had a street tune done to my 00 Coupe by ECS and it was like night and day difference in the way the car ran. The SOTP(Seat of the pants) dyno told me I had more power. Mine is an M6 and I gained so much more TQ then before the tune. If you have an auto you can change shift points and make it shift like it should.
They had to keep it tame in the factory to keep everyone happy(GOV).
You can get a mailorder tune from ECS or Chuck Cow and I have heard they are great if you can not get the car to a tuner or dyno.
If you have Intake, headers a tune will really help with the power.

One reason, I'd guess, is that when tuned the car runs closer to a lean condition and right on the edge of too much timing versus a factory tune. It makes getting a tank of bad gas more than an inconvenience. Also things like removing torque management, and raising shift points and rev limits adds stress to parts like engines, transmissions, and rear ends which increases the likelihood of those parts failing requiring warranty work. Yes there are safe guards that can be put in place with a custom tune and it depends on how aggressively the car is tuned, but that is my short answer.

Voiding the warranty, assuming you still have one.
