Default Cutouts

I have a 00 hardtop and looking for info on cutouts. Where is the best place to mount these so they sound the best? Been looking at the pics and some have them up front, before the cat, others back farther. Just looking for a better sound, but want to keep it quiet when needed.
I already have the Corsa Captains Call on the boat, now I need these for the C5. Thanks, Greg

I put mine right in front of the trany. seemed like the only place i had enough room to fit them. Using QTP electric cut outs.

Default cutouts

Thanks! Still trying to decide which kind to buy. I talked to my muffler shop and they told me I should get them and they will install. I will do the wiring myself. Don't really know how they cut into them and re-weld them. Do they have to remove the pipes, or can it be done on the car?

well i had to weld in the y pipe incerts on mine so i dropped the pipes from the X back. You'll have to mark the placement of the incerts before you drop it so you'll know where to cut if your doing it like i did. Also buy alot of blades if your using a reciprocating saw to cut the pipes. Used 1 blade per cut on stainless steel =o

If I was doing them this is where I'd put them.

Talk to forum member Patches - I think he has cutouts on his car and has written up some good posts in the past on them.

I have a set of QTP cutouts on my M6 coupe that I really like. Stealth when you need it and raucous when you're in the mood. Mild to Wild at the flick of a switch. Not for everyone, obviously.

Here's a series of pics of my cutout installation. I ran mine up the torque tube from the cutouts into the cabin through the shifter opening.

Here's a video I made when I switched from Ti's to GHL Bullets. I opened and closed the cutouts with each setup so you can hear the difference.

After the X or H-Pipe and before they go over the axle!

Some however have installed them on the downside of the exhaust before they turn into the mufflers - right behind the rear end!

Thanks,Matt

that's where i did mine DMH 2.5" round - best warranty and a great build. yeah, you might have to wait for a call back, but they're great to work with.

as for the install, you can't see them at all without crawling down under there, and little drone in the car because instead of the sound and heat bouncing off the pavement right back up to your transmission (which sits between your seats), it's pointed out the back end underneath the bumper. it's also in line with the exhaust flow, so you'll have more gases actually flowing out through the cutouts than if you used a 90°off the side location.

Well, since I started that thread, I guess I should chime in. I ended up going with DMH Low Profile Cutouts. I had them welded in the 90 degree bend just prior to the mufflers. I wired the switch in the ash tray like patches did. I like where the cutouts are because they are in the back, not under my car bouncing the noise up into the cabin. The only time I have any drone is with the windows up and the cutouts wide open. But honestly how many times do you drive your car with the windows up? Here is a picture of the cutouts on my car.

I guess those mentioning drone with the cutouts mid-ship have never ridden in my car - I have zero drone where my cutouts are installed and no heat effects. They sound great where they are and still function like new after ten years. There is no "bounce" effect as they are pointed 45 deg. to the rear but even at a standstill there is no reverberation or unpleasant sound.

I originally installed the QTP's after experiencing horrible drone (which I am ultra-sensitive to and cannot tolerate long) with my Borla Stingers. After 30 minutes of driving with the Stingers, I would get nauseated and have to get out of the car. Once I replaced the Borlas with Ti's and installed the cutouts, no more drone and I could drive the car for hours with no ill effects. I have had many Vette and non-vette owners listen to my setup and they always grin ear-to-ear when hearing it. I also have a Vararam intake/heads/cam/headers/GHL.

I did this as an exhaust sound mod, not performance, but a couple of members with the same installation location dyno'ed 10 rwhp higher with the cutouts open a few years ago. I've had at least 5 different exhaust systems on this C5 over the years and this is the one I settled on because I do like it so much.

finally found a camera (we've been moving). sorry about the atrocious filth & leaking diff, but you get the idea...

let's see if i can get this sound clip to work. mild 4th gear pull from 70 - and keep in mind the sound level is in comparison to wind noise of having the window down on the interstate. stock cam and i've still got cats.
