Went out to the garage Sat morning to get my day started, and pick some strawberries. I hit the opener for the far door, the Vette’s side. Click goes the opener, but the door only moved about a foot before halting rather abruptly. A closer look across the garage, revealed the spring hanging loosely down.
My heart sank, and I allegedly may have uttered some colorful words, as I walked across the garage for a closer look. Spring broken, hanging down and the safety cable is hanging vertically from the end of the angle irons. A quick look at the vette, and no damage is seen.
Phew.
Later I confirmed the lack of damage after manually opening the door and taking the car outside. I also found several pieces of spring shrapnel in various parts of the garage, apparently when one of those things lets go, it creates some excitement in the area.
Had this happen to my parents about 15 years ago. Unfortunately we did not have a safety cable running through the spring and it dropped onto the quarter panel and rear spoiler of my brother's pristine '79 Camaro Z28. Doh!
I was in the house a few years ago sitting on the couch watching a football game. I heard what sounded like an explosion (louder than a gun shot or M-80) coming from the garage area. I went out there thinking I was going to find a complete conflagration when I opened the door. Once I got the door opened it took me a second to determine what had happened. The spring over the double door had snapped. Luckily it did not send any pieces anywhere, but boy was it loud.
