Traded my 00 FRC for a Z06 and have previously had a wheel lock key on my 99 FRC and 00 FRC. I can't find the key on this 02 Z06. I have brought this to the attention of the dealer but seem to be clueless about the key. There were two Z06 on the lot when purchased one had the key, car built in April and the one I purchased built sometime in May.The owners manuel that they gave me had a piece of paper stuck in the manuel stating supplement to the 02 Vette Owner's Manual. The topic was using the wheel lock key "if equipped". The question is do anyone else not have a key to remove the one nut that keeps thieves for stealing the wheels. The lug nuts on the wheel appear to be one piece and if you put the wrench to the nuts they should unscrew and come off without the key but on the other Z06 that I did not buy definitely needed the key to remove the one lug nut. Are those lug nuts covered with a plastic cover that pull off to make them more attrative before putting the air socket to them to undo. Any info is apprecitated. I am beginning to think my car came equipped with the wheel lock key. Would they consider this an option or is this another/new way to save a buck for the General. Thanks for any input.
They don't all come with locks, the lock set is in the back of the car when the dealer gets it and they open the package and install them on the car.
So if you have locks you would find a plastic bag in your car with the four original lug nuts they took off to install the locks and the lock key.
locks are more trouble than they are worth imho.
The plastic covers screw off without an air tool.
Mine is a late 02, built in May. It has chrome lug nuts without any locks. There are no plastic covers and no lock-key.
My reaction was similar to yours. I satisfied myself by checking all the lug nuts with a 19mm deepwell socket to ensure they all turn without a key....They did.
Absence of a llocking lug nut, solves a problem for GM. But I liked the fact that I didn't need to be concerned about my wheels being stolen. :(
My concern is that the locks have been installed and I don't have the key to remove the lock. You are narrowing down my concerns, if it had the lock installed do they provide a cap to hide that lock and make the lug nuts all uniform in appearence as in I look at the wheel and I see 5 chome wheel nuts or 4 chome nuts and one nut that requires the key to undo. What is the thinking as you say that some have the locking nut and some not. I am like you could care less about the locking key
There came a point this past spring where all Corvette received all chrome non-locking lug nuts. I shared your concern on delivery of my 02. But that 19mm socket does not lie. All my lug nuts are chrome and all of them turn without a key. Of course after checking them, I had the pleasure of retorquing all the lug nuts...35-70-100 ft pounds in a star pattern.
Thank you RPO_Z06 and Ranger for your input. I think Ranger took care of my concerns. Just don't understand why some have it and some don't. Being the unmechanical person that I am Ranger what size socket do I need to untighten the nuts on the wheel to do as a test drive. Will your basic lug wrench in your basic car remove the lug nuts on my wheel. Also a little scitzy with that tire repair kit in the back. Felt my run flats would take care of me, the kit I am not sure, did I say I was not mechanicle inclined. Guess I need to keep that roadside assistance number handy.
Wow I think I am two time zones about your thinkiing and my responses, so I do have 5 chome lug nuts. As you can see not too many posts but have reading you all for well over owning my 99 FRC, not many concerns as they are always answered my just reading, this one was bothering me though.
On the stock wheels, the actual lug nut is covered with a plastic lug cover. That's what you see when you look at the wheel. These can easily be removed to view the lug nuts. You'll have to visually inspect the lug nuts to see if one on each wheel is different from the others. If they're all the same, the locking nuts have not been installed. If one is different, you'll need the key. Normally the dealer would install the locking lugs, and give you the key either in a plastic bag, or in its storage area in the trunk. Beneath the carpet between the center storage compartment and the left compartment in the trunk area there's a depression which is where the key is 'meant' to be kept.
