I am trying to convince my dad that the book values are not applicable in most cases. I don't want him to overpay for a car at a dealer. The car is nice but i think the price may be too high.
So, please chime in with your opinion on what number you put on this car (without regard as to what price the car is being sold).
02 yellow vert, M6spd, 53k mi., extremely nice condition, mostly stock with a few minor mods that are insignificant. Everything of note is stock. Otherwise the car checks out nicely.
I would think that $18500 would be a good deal on the car. What are they asking for it?
Yeah, I am in a similar ballpark with you. I am not sure what their list price is but I am going to see what my dad discussed with them. I'll let you know what happens.
Meanwhile, if anyone else wants to throw a number on the thread then please do.

Nada says 20k retail which is probably around what they are asking. There are plenty of deals out there to be had. If he can't get them down tell him to keep looking.

I don't think I would advise him to pay 20. That would be absolute top dollar. 17 would be good and 18-19 maybe ok.
I would think that the car should retail for $17-19,000 depending on real condition and options. Regional variations around the country might make it go a tad higher.
the clean trade number is typically where auction prices are. sometimes auctions even go over clean trade a tad
unless the dealer wants to dump the car you won't get it at clean trade since that's where they would sell it to another dealer
$500-1000 under retail is usually realistic, options, condition, if it needs anything etc
based on book 19k would be a realistic deal
there's no money in it for the dealership at 17k
Thanks bum, you were right on. The dealer wouldn't go below 20k so he walked away. 20k may not have been the worst deal ever but it certainly wouldn't have been what I would've called an really fair price for the purchaser.

20 is top dollar, not surprised though, i was just at a dealer auction a few months ago when i bought my z06 and got to see what dealers are paying
car like you describe in good condition would sell for 17-18k at auction. a dealer would have to get 19k to make it worth their while. looking for 20 isn't out of line but it is top dollar
if you really wanted it you could ask to talk to the sales manager and have a written offer of 19k in hand and see what he does
that's really about as low as could be expected.
thing is, these cars aren't that easy to find in good condition anymore. lot of beat up c5's on the market.
Sounds like nice car and mileage. You can bet that the dealer low balled everything they could pop on, to take on trade. Whatever kbb, nada, or kens buying guide said, they paid less. They have spent the minimum to have the car pass any state inspection/requirements to resell. They always have a minimum addition to that total ( I call it "the fig"), plus what ever they think the car can bring. That's up to the salesperson to sell. After the fig, they will want to sell the car, period. Just keep negotiating til you get to the price you are willing to pay. Dig your heels in, hold out. It does not matter what someone else thinks you should buy the car at. It's you that's buying it. Dealers always add too much for tags n' title too. Just count that to what you want to pay, NOT in addition to what you want to pay. Always check DIC/DTC codes before you buy. Use your head, get it checked out if you like at a trusted mechanic. If all is good, pull the trigger, start driving and enjoy.
