Are their any transmission maintenance issues associated with the C-5? How do you check for proper level ? Should the fluid be changed peridocially? If so when.
You will find that opinions vary on this, but I believe that an auto should have the fluid changed every 30,000 miles or so. Keep in mind that a drain, filter change and refill only drains about half the fluid in the trans. The rest is held in the torque converter and fluid passages.
The Factory Service Manual has specific instructions for checking or refilling. Briefly, with the vehicle raised, transmission fluid level is checked with the engine running at idle in park AND when the fluid reaches 122 degrees on the DIC. At that exact point, the plug on the side of the trans pan is removed and if a small amount of fluid dribbles out or the fluid is at the edge of the opening, the trans is full.
Keep in mind that as the engine continues to idle, trans fluid temperature will continue to rise and expand and run out the opening, so the level check should be done quickly and the plug installed immediately thereafter.
The plug must be installed BEFORE shutting down the engine, or HOT fluid will cascade out of the opening at shutdown.
