pulling codes on a 99

pulling codes on a 99
I am looking for a C-5 97-2000 I tried pulling the codes on the 99 and nothing came up, did I do anything wrong or was there a problem?
steps:
turned key on (did not start)
pressed reset button to clear everything
held options and pressed Fuel button 4 times in a row within 1o seconds but no codes came up.
Did I do something wrong?

thanks when I go back to see the car again I will try to get the codes. The Vette I am looking at is a 99 with 44K miles 2 owners, car fax provided a very detailed report first owner had the car serviced twice a yr, secon owner had it only 2 yrs drove it 2500miles
