I have been told that if you put a bra on a dark color car it will make the covered part color different then the rest of the car?? Has anyone run into this before? I have a black Z and that bra sure does keep the chips and bugs away, but do not want it to change the color.
Legendzzz: I am not a body man, but if you cover something and expose the rest to sunlight its gonna fade.... I have a white car & have used a bra since new. one year later and I have NO chips on the front end however a little rub mark on each side where bra must move a bit. It seems tight, but a little rub mark is better than lots of chips.. just my $.02......
I haven't seen any posts remarking on the subject. Most seem more concerned about moisture. Had one on a black C4 for 17 years with no difference in color. No difference in the front end paint, either; it was as good as new.
Maybe in the olden' days, when paint jobs sucked, but in today's world it is slightly different. As rwd said, it is more of a moisture issue than anything.
If you are ONLY using for long trips, I highly recommend the Colgan. I just used it on a 1500 mile drive, and it was phenomenal. Easy to install (after I read the directions), covers a lot of face (including the headlights), and has mirror covers too.
It saved me from more bugs than anything, but it was well worth the hundred dollars.
If you want to leave it on all the time (which I wouldn't recommend), I would probably go for the GM bra.
Or get both and use them for different purposes or at different times of the year (where there are seasonal variations, bugs and road debris may be less of a problem in the winter). Cheap insurance. It's really a good idea to have help the first time or two you put a new one on, though. One slip can cause a problem.
Hi Guys,
New to this forum. But I am curious re: the bra thing. I tried the one from Colgan. Nicely made product and I've used their bras for years, but I took it back because the intake screens on the Z06 are covered with clear plastic. This I did not like because I'm sure it reduces the amount of cooler air that enters the intake area. The GM one is the same way. Anybody heard of one made that uses some sort of a fabric screening material?? I am sort of a fanatic about road nicks and bugs and usually leave the bra on my cars all the time. They have saved the nose of many a car.
Colgan does make a Z06 bra that is open at the intakes. You just have to specify Z. I've got one.
The politically correct line on the GM bra is that the intakes are just used to channel the air and blocking them does not reduce the volume. I've got both bras, and when I switched to the Colgan, I seemed to notice a slight SOTP increase, but that can be misleading. In any case, there were no overheating issues with the GM.
Sorry to hear that. Hope it gets resolved quickly and easily. BTW, you might want to consider getting mirror covers, as well. Cruise Control, a forum sponsor, iirc, had a sale going on recently. The mirrors on most vettes are very vulnerable.
Have had bra 100% of the time on my 95 for six years. Used a car cover daytime in the Florida sun- at nite - in a garage. Result was no paint haze and no paint difference. Another car 6 years with the same Colgan Bra, no paint problems. Third car 02 Z06 Colgan Bra 6 months no paint haze no color problems. All black cars. The Bra saved the front end from stones, sand, local bugs called love bugs (aka paint eaters),
Only problem is the right headlight cover coming loose at 70mph plus with the headlights up. Tried repeatedly to contact Colgan Customer Service but they would not return my phone calls . Still waiting eight months later.
Thankfully the rest of the Bra is good. Nevertheless I would not recommend Colgan again due to their poor Customer Service. Not worth the aggrevation.
I got mine from CC also, and it has the proper vents for the Z06 openings too. Got the mirror covers too, and I am sure am glad - they saved me from a chip already!!
Just spoke to the Chevy bodyshop about this. Proper procedure is to remove the bra weekly and clean and wax the covered area. He said that there is no real issue about paint differences but definitely about moisture.
Personally-in the Florida sun-I would only use it on the days that I am commuting (highway driving) and then remove it. I did have a paint difference issue on a red car but that was 8 years ago.
