Check with this site. I just bought a new FOB for my 03. Came with instructions. Took about five minutes to program it. Works great. They have a store front on Amazon.
I think you are looking for the silicone pad that your present fob is old and the printing is worn off. the silicone pad it probably worth less than a dollar to manufacture, but could easily command 10 dollars. I've tried several companies to buy just the silicone pads, but Have found no takers.

Yes !! I've tried looking for a replacement silicone pad and can't one. so I thought of trying to find a newer style remote.

Ray,
I'm pretty sure the '01 to '04 FOBs (and the receiver in the car) operate on a different frequency range(s) and are not interchangeable with the '97 thru '00 cars.
A couple years back I just went ahead and bit the bullet and did the late-model changeover. Gene at GMpartshouse offers these as a package deal, complete with 4 new TPMs and the receiver. He also includes the correct Delco connector pigtail. I've been very satisfied with the results and have noticed the improved range over the older early style I had.

HTH
As much as I wanted to keep the original fobs and TPMS, switching to the '01-'04 version was well worth the investment. The range and consistency of the new fobs speak for themselves.
The direct answer is "no". You can't just program the newer fobs to the 97-00 cars. A lot of forum members have 2000 fobs that don't work. I'd list an ad in c5 parts wanted for an old non working fob and swap the pad in.
