After I have driven several miles and stop I hear a knocking noise for a few seconds It is not the engine. Does anybody have any ideas? This is a 2001 convertible.
We need more information than that.
Is the car stopped and not running?
What is the temperature of the engine and the outside air.
Is it coming from any certain area, like the front, center rear?
If the car is not running, it might be the Catalytic converter popping and cracking due to the heat. If the car is running, it could be almost anything.
The noise is in the front. You only hear it after driving thirty minutes or so. It never does it in town. It is not overheated. It makes the noise as you are coming to a stop and quits after you completely stop.

Auto or manual? Maybe throwout bearing...that's on the "common problems" list.
With a corvette, I can say it is probably not opportunity.
I will also take a guess, something with the brakes, since it involves stopping . The fact that it is a country noise and not happening in the city makes me think . Not of a solution, god no, who could do that with the available information. It makes me wonder if the noise is a little bit country or a little bit rock and roll .
When you start walking home or take a cab after weird noises happen, then I will be more sympathetic . Sadly, I am already maxed out at my mechanical help level, low skills.
I would go with heat soak as my second guess, but that was already taken.

Not opportunity! Classic! This has got to be one of the all time best answers on this forum. You're killing me!
You guys are funny but I guess nobody has had this problem. Thanks
These folks are trying to help, but we are looking for more input. Sound advice can not be given with out getting as much detail as possible.
Since the car is underway, We can assume the engine is running and since it goes away when you get to a complete stop, it is likely not in the drive train.
That pretty much leaves the suspension and the brakes. Is there any vibration when you apply the brakes? Does it occur just driving down the road or are you applying the brakes. Specifics will help to diagnose.
