One day in 2012 I stopped for gas put the car in park but when I removed my foot from gas the car went in reverse. After turning the car off and on again it worked fine.
Today in 2013 I pulled up to stop, put the car in park and again it went in reverse. HAs been happening all day with many times turning the car off and on. With a total of 20 stops and starts of the engine only three times has it worked properly.

The shifter seems it does not want to lock into anything but drive and can be moved without depressing the button to shift.
Anyone have the exact experience with this or take a good guess at what might be the issue and resolution?
Thank in advance.
PS. Just 30,000 mi on car.
Sounds like the shifter cable is misaligned. VERY common problem on C5's is the bushing on that cable letting go, which usually prevents the car from shifting at all...You may be experiencing beginning failure of that bushing.. Do a search here for A4 shifter cable and you will find the documents that illustrate the bushing failure.
Thank you very much for the information. It was the shifter cable and it needs to be replaced. I'm having the dealership do it for $150.00. Thank you thank you!
