Default Goodbye Black 01Z → Hello Machine Silver 04Z

Hello, just thought I'd introduce myself and announce the adoption of my new baby. I've been a member for at least 6-7 years, this is my second Z06, but this is the first one I'm really proud of.

2004 Machine Silver Z06.
47k miles, 2 owners, still has GMPP warranty.
It was posted on C5s for Sale, drove it home yesterday from CT to VA.

Here's a picture with his younger brother. Sadly, the previous owner couldn't keep both. Bad for him, good for me.

I used to have a 2001 Z06 too, but sold it to specifically get an 04 405hp Z with lower miles and in nicer condition. Here's my old 01Z:

Look at that wheel gap! OEM lowering bolts were frozen!

This pic was from Summit Point Shenandoah.

My goals for the 2004 Z06 is to have a nice street car that I can also take to 10-12 track days a year (when I'm not racing my e36m3).
Right now its only mods are T1 bars, C6 shifter, and upgraded head unit. Next mods will be Dewitts radiator w/C6 oil cooler lines. Then Doug Rippie differential cooler. After that, probably need to come up with a good sport seat or maybe just go with a Kirkey Road Race Intermediate seat. Not sure how I will like that on the street.

I just love this car though! Good power, pulls so smoothly. Looks and feels like a new car honestly. I hope I can get a radiator in time for September 14-15 track events. I might be tempted to track it on the stock radiator, but I'd hate to hurt the car and/or do short sessions or limp it around for a few laps.

Looking forward to playing with the Over-the-Hill-Gang at NASA and other events soon!

Thanks for looking!

Is there a big difference between the 01 and your 04?

Previous owner had similar feelings. I asked how he liked the C6 compared to the C5. He said "the C6 feels....refined". It's definitely a faster car but doesn't feel as wild, at least that's been my experience.

Well the 04 has better dampers and the rear is more planted, which can be important on such a high hp car. The 20 hp is noticeable. The 04 has top mount battery terminals, and I had problems with the side mount posts on my 01. My 01 just wasn't in nearly as nice shape as the 04, that has as much to do with it as any of the model year changes.

Yes, I know the poster - his '01 was a POS, the '04 is a much nicer car and better in everyway. We've been forums friends from Bimmerforums since way back in '05.

Really? You can feel a SOTP difference with 20hp? I have driven my buddy's '02 with a cam and it didn't really feel much faster than my '01.

Thanks for the input. I am in the market for a C5 Z06 myself, and would like to get as much opinions as possible before spending the wad of money on one. Just trying to get the best one that I can afford.

Haha, yep. And we still have our E36 M3s from back in 2004-2005. Awesome cars just like the Z06s.

Well it was subtle, I'd say the 04 has a bit more top end. A bit less wheel spin though, likely due to the 04 rear shock valving.
When I did track my 01Z I was right behind an acquaintance in his 03Z. I carried more speed through the turn behind him and gained on him, but then on the straight he slowly pulled on me. That was noticable.

Any Z06 is a good car as long as it is in good condition and maintained properly. My mission buying the 2004 Z was to get the best (stockish) car out there and never again regret getting something simply because it was the cheapest one I could find. The cheap deals never seem to work out for me. Sad to say it took me this long to learn that.

If just went from silver to black this year. What a pain black is to keep looking clean compared to silver. So much less work for you know. And I also agree you can feel the difference between the 01's and 02+ Zs. To me its like the difference between a 350 hp LS1 and the 01 Z

My car seems to have great top end. It is when I get into 3rd gear that I am really impressed with how hard it keeps pulling. At my home track, Hallett Motor Circuit, it was the two tight slow turns where I felt I was lacking down low. That is why I thought maybe a gears swap was the solution but most on here say not to waste the time/money on gears.

in stock form 01Z and 02-04 pull about the same below 3k rpm. That xtra 20hp was def noticeable in higher rpms tho. That being said, once cams/modding begins they become the same car

E36 m3 track car and supercharged z06 owner here too....both platforms are superb!

Then I capped it off buying my wife an s2k...I love machines that define engineering excellence, and imo all three do it well...

We've got a local crew of 5-6 NASA instructors that have Z06s and they said gears is not worth it on track. In fact one guy got it and first lap immediately wanted the original final drive back
BTW. There's nothing wrong with an 01, still a great car! Some of them probably make almost the same hp as the 02-04s.

I've seen your posts searching machine silver pics. You may be biased. But you have good tastes and clean mods IMHO.

Agreed.
I almost got an S2K, I agree it is a great car. I loved wringing my friends Ap1 out on track, could just throw it into the turns. So well balanced, nimble, with telepathic turn in. It was that or the Z and I just wanted something that was more of a challenge to go WOT everywhere.

Didn't you also have a white eg hatch with itbs years ago? Thought I recognize the screen name from H-T.
