You might experiment with lowering the camera mounting position slightly, so we see a little more out the window, and less at you in the rearview. 
Also, I think you already are, but make sure you have the camera in Spt mode. If its sunny at all the camera won't pick up images out through the windshield at all in the default Ctr mode.
