I promised to publish dyno and SOTP differences between the T1 carbon fiber from Halltech and the Vararam. Today was the day so "the results are in".
Stupid me I left the dyno chart at the shop but I will get him to email it to me. Also the dyno wideband was not in operation so we had to see what was happening with the scanner.
As far as the dyno goes (I remember the hp numbers) the T1 made 370.1 RWHP in the 95 degree heat of the shop. Installed the Vararam, (about a 1.5 hour job - NOT easy and I wouldn't attempt without a lift) - brought the LTFT's back to zero (had to lean the base setting one click). Made a pass - 366.2 RWHP - wth??!! Lost HP?? The tuner believes at this point the Vararam is causing the car to run rich so we lean out one setting - and the RWHP jumped to 371.4. Scanner still happy with the fuel so we tried one more setting lean and made no more power so we went back one click rich. I would have prefered the wideband but this tuner (Brad Brand) in one of the best in the country.
So bottom line is that in the heat with both intakes set to optimum MAFT settings the result was nearly identical. This was no surprise to me as I actually expected this (if you don't chose to believe check my previous posts). The Vararam advantage should, in theory, come on after the car is moving, and this was born out when Optic and I raced.
SOTP.. I am reluctant to say anything because I have, on several occassions, said on this board that SOTP is a great subjective measure for the driver but meaningless to anyone else, I prefert hard dyno AND track numbers. Anyway I took the car up the road and got on it HARD through 3rd gear, and all I can say is that I believe it pulled much stronger once the car was moving and I was shifting 1-2 and 2-3. I actually got the tires to spin on the 3-4 shift (don't think it did this before). So SOTP was a definite positive.
One comment. I still love my T1, in fact I like Jim's carbon fiber looks and design (more air flow) that I left the Halltech carbon fiber CAG unit on, so to that extent it is not a pure apples to apples comparison, but close enough IMO.
Next stop will be the track. Hope to get there in a week or so, maybe even Optic will come out to play again :smash: :smash: :smash:
I'm about to get the Vararam and wonder why you say you wouldn't do it without a lift? I've seen the install in photos so I know it's complex, but is a lift really necessary? Thanks in advance.... :yesnod:
Les, thanks for the time and effort..........I appreciate it.......
Amazing that you did the install in an hour & a half......
Most have been in the 2-3 1/2 hour range..........( of course, we don't know the brewski counts here do we??.)...........
DBK - Maybe with ramps I would try it, but the hardest part of the install is from underneath the car - no way would I do this without a lift, but I am old and have a bad back :)
Z06LS6 - I helped very little, paid Brad Brand to install and tune the car - he is very good at what he does. If I did this myself it would have been a 2.5 hour job AND a sixpack.
rbartick - yes the Halltech T1 carbon fiber air bridge was a direct bolt-up to the Vararam, and it makes for a sweet (but expensive) combo.
Les, thanks for your post. I have been following these intake comparisons for some time now, and am ready to begin some mods to my car. I live in Blue Ridge, about 90 miles north of Atlanta, and would have no problem taking my car to the city for some tuning by an experienced tuner. I have seen you mention the name Brad Brand, where does he work ? " one of the best in the country ", What is his background ? Thanks in advance.
Brad Brand owns Atlanta Chassis Dyno (770 623 9789) in Duluth, Ga. He has been tuning street and strip cars for over 10 years. He holds the world record for an EFI car Outlaw class (10.5" tires) in drag racing. He is mentioned often in Motor Trend, Hot Rod, Car Craft etc. when they take tuner cars to him to get them dialed in. He does the tuning and dyno for Panoz. I know people from as far away as Chicago drive their cars to have him tune them. So yea, IMO one of the best. I feel lucky to have him nearby.
