i'm using a generic unit i bought years ago from autozone. cost me around $25 and i have used it almost constantly on my 78 (before i sold the car 6 months ago) and on my c5 ce convertible (for about the last 5 years). neither of these are dd and this little unit has served me well all these years. the 78 had optima red cell in it all the time and i never had a problem with it even using the car one weekend a month or even less sometimes.
there have been numerous posts here about what people are using and what success they have had, and i would guess that it is pretty evenly split between those that believe you should only use the very best (battery tender, ctek, etc) or something else. what i took from these over the years is that like most things out there, it isn't necessarily the price you pay for something as much as it is the results you get out of it. there are good and poor results on both sides i'm sure. however to answer your original question, there are loads of us that have been using some form of device to keep a charge in a seldom used vehicle with great success. if you have a dd you shouldn't need to use one unless you have a real electrical problem. your car should be good to go without one even if you only drive it on weekends (assuming you have a good battery to begin with). my 04 has actually sat for periods of up to almost 6 weeks without a "tender" on it and it started right up. (the reason i didn't have it attached to a tender was that the garage was unattended for that period of time and i was afraid of the potential for an electrical fire that would be out of control before it could be discovered).
Battery Tender Plus. Have three of them. One on bike, truck, and 'Vette. Like the adapter and extension cord that allows me to hook it up to the alternate power supply in the center console. No more opening and closing the hood.
I bought a Deltran Battery Tender Plus about 10 yrs ago for my Harley. Sold my Harley so I have been using it on my Vette for the pass 7 yrs. A couple of months ago I neglected to reattach it after and outing and after 3 weeks the battery (Optima Red Top) went dead. I attached the Battery Tender and in 2- maybe 3 - days the red light (dead) switched to green (full charge). The car started right up.
I'll never be without one. They now come with multiple leads so you can hook um up to several cars at a time.
