i may have the opportunity to buy this 97 with 127k miles. i think i can get it pretty cheap. problem is that it wont start. its pulling codes p1631 and b2721. the car is about 6 hrs from me so i havent been able to troubleshoot it myself but ive asked the dealership that it is at to clean the ignition cylinder and the tdr and to report back to me. I think the owner. assuming that this doesnt fix it, and the owner doesnt want to put any more into it to get it to start, what should i pay?
I would think somewhere close to salvage value since potentially the engine may be terminal . . .I'd say five grand tops.
The two codes indicate the key pellet may be bad or incorrect. I doubt highly those code are present because the engine is bad. I suspect with those codes, the engine/ignition never even turns over.
The car has a lot of miles ( not really a big deal) and the starting issue. I'd make an offer at less than $8000, probably start at $6000 and see what it gets for a response. The problem could be as simple as a bad key, or very weak battery or it could need a new (sorta expensive) Body Control Module.
Since you live in Cleveland TN. there is someone in Knoxville that would be able to get it running for you. John Llewellyn @ 865 604-0498.
He and I just did an engine swap on a 97 this week. That car will be for sale at CorvetteExpo in Sevierville this weekend. It is a running car with a dd radio white over black, priced at around $12,000. He'll be inside the big building at the big red trailer (Wildcat Corvette parts)
There will be lots of C-5s there for sale and you should be able to get a rough idea of costs.
Be sure to stop and say hi. I'm having my 57 T bird through the auction and I'll be leading the Friday night cruise. Most all people there know me (Steve Fischer), but I'll be either at the big red trailer or driving cars through the auction.
