I have a 98 and the dealership said I have a small leak in the ac condenser. They want $900 to replace it. Is this a must? I hardly ever use air conditioning. Does it affect anything else if I don't get it fixed or is it a top priority?
Defogger also uses the AC to get rid of cabin moisture.
Yep. Just don't drive it on a humid or rainy day, trust me your windows will never defog without the AC. My AC wouldn't kick on for a separate issue (ambient air temp sensor shorted out, causing exterior temp to read -39) and my windows wouldn't defog whatsoever on a humid day... had to wipe the windows off with a rag as I drove it!
I'd get a second opinion, preferably from a specialist A/C shop. Sometimes they can repair small leaks and their prices tend to be lower than the dealer anyway.
I posted earlier about the price of repair, but decided maybe you were just looking for opinions about driving with out A/C.
NO Way is it ever going to be an OK car for daily driving if it rains or humid days. You will go nuts having to keep the inside windshield clear from condensation. Fix it is the best option. $900 is a little high but not too bad. It definitely is worth the $900 to fix it.
