I did on my 03 Z. Had to call a bunch of dealers to find one who could get me financing. My credit score is in the high 700s. Did eventually find a bank willing to do it though.

Definitely go with a credit union for financing. Not only will you get a lower rate, it will be easier to get a loan especially if you have a checking account there and some savings.

At my CU, I usually go in and get a pre-approved loan amount for a vehicle I want to buy. The CU gives me a letter of authorization for a certain dollar amount and then I go deal for a car as if it's a cash sale to them. They take the letter, contact the CU, and the CU cuts a check for the amount of the deal. That way I avoid having to deal with the finance guy at a dealer.

It should be the same way if you are dealing with a private party. Make your deal for a specific dollar amount, have the seller create a Bill of Sale, and take that back to the CU. The CU cuts a check to the seller and then you go back to hand over the check, get the car and the title. The title will have to go to the CU as they will be the "legal owner". They handle the title transfer with your state's DMV.

It would be easier if the seller met with you at your CU; that way the entire transaction can be done in one spot. 80 miles should not be a big deal for the seller especially if he thinks you both are getting a good deal. Maybe even slip him some cash for gas money for his trip?

Call Penfed, they will explain the quick and easy process
They are very easy to work with, I highly doubt you will find a better rate
I recently inquired about buying from a private party
Penfed said they needed a copy of title and a form filled out that can be downloaded from their website
They are available 7 days a week with extended hours
I am not affiliated in any way

You can join if you or a family member served in the Armed Forces. If not, there is an organization you can join for around $25 that allows you to join. Just apply online, private party is no problem. All of their info is on their website.

I bought my 01 earlier this year through my credit union. It was private party half way across the country. They cut a bank check for the amount and I flew out and bought it. The whole process way very easy

My local bank wouldn't do anything older than 10 years, the credit union did no issues. The rate wasn't quite as good because mine is an '01, but they did it based on the loan to value. My car books out on Kelly for nearly $10k more than I paid.

I used PenFed.... .99%.

I love PenFed. Used them for my Vette and for my mortgage before it was paid off.
