I have been on lurking on this forum for awhile but I need some advice. I have a 2004 C5 with 27,000 miles on it which I love. Corvettes are my favorite car and they always will be. However, I am tired of only getting to drive it every now and then. I work in a coal mine so driving it to work is not an option due to the fact that I feel guilty putting miles on it and I need just a bit more ground clearance. I have been driving a 2005 Camry which I hate driving with a one and a half hour commute. I want to trade to have a daily driver so what would you guys pick between the new Chevy SS and a Camaro 1LE SS? If keeping the Vette is not an option.
As much as I like the design of the Camaro, the blindspots make me feel like daily driving that thing would be a hassle. I rented one for a weekend a few weeks ago and put it through its paces. Unfortunately I got an automatic but it was an SS. The pickup was decent for how big it is. The ride was comfy and the creature comforts were nice, but I just couldn't get over the blindspots.
I haven't checked out the Chevy SS yet. It looks nice but I think the pricetag is a bit high.
I have test drove Camaros before and I also didn't like the blind spots. I believe I could get used to it. Most of my driving is on two lane roads as well. As far as the price with everything you get with the SS I think its a pretty good deal. A lot of technology for the price. I haven't got to see one yet either because none of the dealers around me has one yet. They sure do sound good from what videos I have watched.
If you like corvettes that much, why not get one for a daily driver and just raise it to suit. . One with enough mileage where you wouldn't feel guilty about using it wouldn't cost the world. My buddy was telling me over in Hawaii people raise their sports cars, where on the mainland a custom street car is lowered. He mentioned his raised up Porsche.
I had a Camaro rental for a week and about 1600 miles, hated the blindspots. While I had it I stopped and drove a Mustang. Night and day difference. You might want to give that a look.
From what I have been reading and talking with the local dealer, get ready to pay over sticker for a new SS. I understand that GM may only import about 3000 in the first year. Now if they just sit on the lot for a while that could change. It's a real shame that cars like this can't be made here and the market allow it to sink or swim. My 95 SS is approaching 200k and has been a great ride and I was hoping to add another SS to the stable, but it's not looking very promising at this point.
I don't think I could ever live with myself if I bought a Mustang. I drink from the GM koolaid. I had completely planned on buying a new C7 but when I got in one I just did not fit. 6'4" 240. I have thought about a new Denali but I have had trucks ever since I was 16 and I want something that is almost or just as quick as my C5 but thanks for the input guys.
Also, if anyone is wondering why I am against the Mustang and have a Toyota it is because the Toyota was free. My in laws bought it for my wife when she was in college.
why not get an used mid size p/u or suv. Good on gas and you can keep the vette.
My buddy has an s-10 and we put a turbo on the 4.3. The build was cheap, has power like a SOB and at the end of the day you get a fun DD and keep the vette.
Even a SBC converted S-10 can be had pretty cheap?
Just not a fan of the 5th Gen Camaro. I'd go for the SS. Other than that, I'd look for a nice used G8 GT.
Exactly right in my opinion. The Camaro looks sweet but go with a 2014 if you go that route. Give it an extended test drive to see if you like it. The vision is a big detractor for me but perhaps it has improved with the new one.
The new SS is better than early pictures made it look. I think they are bad ***. If you can afford one then this is a great option.
If neither of the above work then a G8 GT is a great choice. That's what I am presently looking at myself.
raise the c5 and drive it. Put some miles on that thing what's the point of it being a garage queen if you feel guilty
It doesn't take much, we're not talking monster-truck heights.
I was getting annoyed at having to tippy-toe around the speed-bumps and rain gutters in my neighborhood until I discovered that mine had been lowered by the previous owner. Had my mechanic bump it up from 3/4" lower than stock to 1/4" higher: much more pleasant to drive.
