So my car is making a really loud chattering noise when I turn it on and off and let go of the throttle it doesn't do it under load. The noise seems to be coming from the drive shaft the car is a 2001 a4 with 3.15s. Please help have no idea what it could be. Thxs
Check the rear axle nuts. I was having clunk/shudder on gear changes in my MN6 and found a thread hear about loose axle nuts causing what would pass as a bad U-joint in other RWD cars. You can try rocking the tire with the car parked. If you hear a sound coming from the hub area, your axle nut may be loose. Check both sides of the car. Couldn't believe it myself, but it cured my problem.
Maybe the torque tube coupler bushings? Does it make noise while sitting still? If so, then this isn't it. But the little "bump" when you give it the gas while driving.. that sounds like TT bushings.
My car only makes that chattering while standing still not rolling. Was yours the same?
Yes as I recall..if you look at pics of the failures there is a lot of crap bouncing around..I think the noise gets lost with any rolling or acceleration. It can go a long time before failing but you should have it checked by someone who knows Corvette drivelines
Vette 99 here I had some of the same noise, come to find out it was my timing chain. not trying to scare you but that was my problem. noise would go away when I accelerated and come back just idling. found this on my 2000 6.0 liter chevy truck and my vette. just something to look at. sound does travel. but take a look at the other things first. please let us know what it was.
