Default AFR/Stock Heads

I have a 2004 Z06. I would like to do a Head & Cam swap. I was thinking of a set of AFR's, the performance shop seems to be leaning on the side of porting and polishing my stock heads, which I have under 20,000 miles. He thinks the AFR's would not improve my performance, as much as the stock heads. Which option would give me better performance, and would be the most cost effective? I want to change the T/B, some say LS-2 and some say LS-6
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks

There are a few too many variables to give you a simple answer.

What's your application? (drag racer, road racer, daily driver, weekend toy, etc.)

How big of a cam do you want, and which AFR head were you looking at? (210, 215, 230)
If you're not certain, then your best bet is to rely on the experience of the performance shop who will be doing the installation and tuning.

Pricing between (1) aftermarket heads and (2) porting the stock heads can actually end up being pretty similar, if you take into consideration the fact that with option 1 you can turn around and sell your stock heads to someone who has a LS1.

You already have a LS6 TB. You can upgrade to the slightly larger LS2 TB, but you would also need to upgrade your intake manifold for compatibility. The most popular options are FAST92, TPIS modified LS6, or ported LS2. You don't want to just slap a stock LS2 manifold on, because they've been shown to be worse than our stock LS6 unit.

I was looking at the 215 0r the 230 AFR. Use of vehicle when the weather is good. A little track, very little, and playing around in the street with friends. I guess the cam would be decided on when I choose the heads. I would like to go with a medium to slightly aggressive, if that is such a thing. If a mild cam is suggested I might just stay with the stock one.
Thank you Skyavonee for your reply, and input.

Who would be porting the stock heads? You mention cost effective, that would probably be stock heads ported by TEA, AI or someone else reputable.

The AFR is probably the better, more expensive option. You might also consider TFS heads as another aftermarket option.
