Default Battery Tray

Probably been discussed before. Why is there a hole in the center of the battery tray? There must be some purpose for it. To access something? After reading several posts of leaking batteries dripping on the PCM, I wonder if there is a tray that can be placed under the battery on top of the existing one to solve this problem?

Thanks for the information. I ordered two of the mats. I have never had a problem with my batteries but this is really inexpensive insurance.
