We'll be doing our NCM delivery in a few weeks of our 2003 Z06. Will be driving to Kansas City, MO to visit friends. The atlas says it's about 520 miles. Then we'll be driving on to Reno.
My question is - should we change the oil in Kansas City? If so, do you know a reputable place to have it done?
Randi I would say your are waisting your money if you have the oil change that quick. I would wait until you get back home. That's my .02. Have a great ride home!
There is a lot of debate over this - I am a changer - I changed mine at the 1100 mile mark - would have done it at 500 if I had gotten my jacking-pucks and procedure down by 500 miles.
I don't think you will cause any harm by just drivng it - but I maybe would take an extra quart of Mobil1 just in case...
I like the idea of changing the initial fluid at 1000 miles, every 3K after that. Some will say I am wasting my money - I believe it is cheap insurance. to each his/her own :)
New engines are subject to particle contamination - core sand, tiny metal fragments, etc. There's been some SAE published research on this, so my choice would be to change the filter at about 200 to 500 miles, but let the oil go for the full interval.
The risk here is that there might be enough particles trapped by the oil filter to clog it and cause the bypass to open, which will allow unfiltered oil into the engine.
What's the chance of this? Probably very little, because modern processing makes for pretty clean engines when new, and that's one reason why few if any manufacturers now have a "breakin oil change" at a thousand miles like they did years ago.
Just the same, having the filter changed (and topping off the oil, the filter holds about half a quart) in the first few hundred miles is pretty cheap insurance. On the other hand, if you follow GM's recommended engine maintenance and don't abuse it the useful service life will probably be at least in the range of 150-250K miles of normal driving.
I have used Mobil 1 for the last 15 years covering a '86 Guldstrand-Traco
Grand Sport '80 Corvette, 1 '87 Buick Grand National, and 1 '86 Buick T-Type, and 2 '87 Buick T-types, 1 of which I still drive as a daily driver, ( so I don't have to flog the new '02 QS Z06. I have always changed oil and filter at every 3K miles (every 3k miles is easy to remember). Maybe turbo cars get the oil dirtier and/or quicker. At 7.5 K miles, are you being much braver than I am, do you know something about oil and filter changes that I do not?, or am I just being overly cautious?
Thanks in advance
Gary Wells
Oops. and I am sorry, I forgot the original query. I also would wait to get back to Reno for the oil & filter change.
I really appreciate your input. I use synthetic oil in my 94 and change it every 3,000 miles too. Just wanted to be sure I wouldn't be doing something bad by waiting to get back to Reno. I will get some Mobil 1 to carry on the way back.
