Default Engine light

Okay… don't laugh. this is my second dumb question.

The check engine light just came on. COULD IT have anything to do with the oil needing changed. I see where the "oil life" was at 9%. I just changed the oil.

I read in the book and it says a bunch of things. Fuel change, emission control system, etc.

THANKS FOR ALL HELP!

You can pull the codes to get an idea.

I don't recall anything specific in the owners manual about it, but my GF's '05 Buick works that way: CEL comes on at 10%.

If you just changed the oil, you'll now need to reset the percentage of use remaining, back to 100%.

To do this turn on the ignition switch (do not start engine), and then press accelerator to the floor three times. Turn off ignition, then start engine, oil life remaining should now read 100%.

Report back if resetting the oil life monitor does the job of clearing the CEL.

I knew about the cycling the throttle 3 times to reset oil %. But last time I changed my oil I selected the trip meter till it displayed the oil% left, then I pushed and held reset and it reset to 100%. I didn't know if this would work but it did.

You have the answer for resetting the oil life monitor. Now for the check engine light.....Did you recently fill up with fuel. If yes, it could be your gas cap isn't on tight. The engine light often indicates an emissions problem. A loose cap will trigger the light.

For future reference, if your engine light ever starts flashing, that is a more serious problem and you should shut the engine down and get it looked at.

THANK YOU for your information.
As a matter of fact, I did go ahead and fill up with a new tank of fuel. The owners manual said that it could be a fuel issue if I had changed fuels. I did not notice the cap being loose, but about 30 seconds after I began driving… that light went off.

I do appreciate your (and every one's help)

THANKS TO ALL!

How about letting him pull the codes, learn how to do it from the DIC and then we'll actually have some information to go on??
