Bought my '99 coupe in July, and I've joined up here and read and learned quite a bit. I don't want to do a ton of mods to my car, but I would like to possibly add a CAI of some sort, and maybe aftermarket cat back exhaust. (has a ZO6 Ti system now.) My question is, do I HAVE to do a tune when I add the CAI to keep the motor from running lean, like it would have on my 2005 Mustang GT, or can I just bolt it on and go? I realize a tune is going to give the best performance, but I'd like to do things one step at a time, if possible. I know the opinions on CAI's are really varied, but which one seems to give the best bang for the buck along with being simple to install? Thanks in advance; you guys are a great source!
Some say yes and some say no. If you have a OEM MAF with a screen it should be fine. when the screen gets removed then thats when the lean code tends to come on, but that is not allways the case, some cars with screens still get a lean code.
MOST of the time you can add a CAI and be good to go. I would not tune my car for a CAI unless i have other mods (Headers, cam, ect..)

If all you are going to do is add a new air intake and a catback exhaust I would wait to do a tune. The car's computer should adjust for those changes and if you add more performance parts later, then do the tune.
My car has a AFE filter system, and a Magnaflow cat back. It'll throw a lean code now and then in the cool spring and fall air if I stand on it for a bit. Normal driving it's ok. wait a minute, that is normal driving right?
