looked at threads about batteries. why would my 04 vette have top post mount battery. looks stock. any ideas? thanks, tom
There some batteries that have both top and side mounts so they can be used in different vehicles that have top or side mounts. Are your cables attached to the top posts ?

The side post design is one who's time has come and gone. Batteries today are sealed much better as regards fumes/vents, etc and negate most, if not all, the original intent by GM to eliminate terminal corrosion, which was much more prevalent back in the day of "tar top" batteries and their early successors. The side post design, pretty much unique to GM, has been around for decades and they have had a lot invested in the design for a long time.
Top post also eliminates battery damage by those who cannot resist following the old "if a little tight is good, a LOT tight is even better" school of bolt tightening, and damaging/stripping the threads out of perfectly good batteries, despite GM's design using a 5/16" hex on the bolt to prevent that.
The amount of surface area available for current flow on a well designed top post terminal is arguably better than the internal threads of a side post battery terminal anyway. If it were me, I'd rather have the newer designed top post cables.
As stated above, GM went to top post battery's for model year 04. What you have IS factory....
Be careful if you order any GM/Delco replacement cables on line. I ordered a negative replacement cable, entered my year/model (2004 C5) and it came as a side-post vs. top post mount cable (no L-clip). Better to drive to an actual store and make sure you get the right one.

Why could they not just use a proven design used for 60+ years that actually when you tighten it--it automatically tightens the connection?
From what you're saying, it seems as though the actual clamp design on the particular cable being used is at fault. Correct? Is this problem you mention one that can be resolved by using a battery post shim?

Yes, the clamp is crap. Shimming has nothing to do with it. If you ever had to put this new design on you would see the obvious problem. Apparently too obvious for the GM Electrical design engineers.
I had to do work on a friends C6 several times related to electrical issues and became aware of the design. If it gets any worse on their car I will have to get a new ones ($$$) or just modify them ( $5) so they actually work.
I bought a Sears dual post battery for my 04. I liked the dual post because I use the side post for battery tender connection . I just plug into tender and don't use the clip type connectors.
