I haven't read the book, but I am pretty familiar with balsa.
End-grain balsa laminates are used in aerospace applications or extreme stiffness, light weight and sound-deadening.
Uses include aircraft cabins, roofs, outer side walls and partition walls as well as wings and various interior panels.
GM simply borrowed it from the aerospace world. As an aside, technically speaking, balsa is a hard wood.

Set an electric fan outside the garage. Close the garage start the car and leave for a bit. They will all be dead in 15 minutes. Just be real careful airing everything out!!!!

Quick; drive your car up to the upper midwest, or east to where it is bitterly cold for a few days. Let it sit out, in the cold nights for a while.
That; should take care of the ants, I would imagine. With no smell of chemical treatment....

carpenter ants update
welllllll the ants are gone...the lesson I learned from this is go to professionals (pest control) over the counter pesticides can sometimes make things worse. they were just after a moist area under the cover...don't think there is any damage to the balsa wood. get treatment specific to your problem...thank you all ...great to be a member
