Default Z06 Battery replacement

Hi, my first post to the forum...really have enjoyed reading the posts. I have a 01 Z06 and I'm on my 3rd battery with 12,000 mi on the car. The dealer has been replacing them OK...but is this a problem? I know the battery has thinner plates than a regular C5 to save weight...but I'm wondering if there is a design problem. Thanks for any advice.

I am nearing 7000 miles on my 02 and no battery problems. I've even stored it 2 weeks straight twice. I hear that there is something like a 25% defect rate with them. If you are worried about being stranded in the middle of no where, use a normal battery like an Optima. I'm going to stick with the original, esppecially if they'll replace it for free.

I bought my Z06 on Saturday, and the battery was dead this morning. Jumped it and took it back to the dealer for serivce. Same thing happened to my dad after he bought his Z06. But, his battery lasted only a day...

From looking at the archives, it sounds like this could be a persistent problem???

Just curious... does the Z06 have a different battery than regular production Corvettes? I've been told its a lighter weight unit? If this is true, does anyone have the specs or the GM part number?

Hi Aeroplt -

I have 7400 miles on my '02 Z with no battery problems.

I have let the car sit fur up to 3 weeks last january during snows.

I will be removing it eventually to repalce it with an optima, but it is ok for now.

best regards -

Although I didn't buy mine new I got her with only 5042 miles on it. It was back to the dealer three days after for a new battery. I am going to search the archives on this topic as well. Thanks

FWIW... After taking my car in this morning to have the battery inspected, the dealer concluded that the battery had not been properly charged from the factory.

Guess we'll see tomorrow morning...

The Delco batteries that GM uses in the Corvettes (and other cars for that matter) seem to have a abnormaly high failure rate. The one in my 99 was fine for the 3+ years I had it and never gave me any problems. My 02 has not died yet, but I have already had 2 or 3 charge system faults show up on the DIC  The 02 uses an AGM (absorbed glass mat) type battery with only 500 CCA (cold cranking amps) The AGM technology makes the battery lighter and uses a gel type electrolite, so the battery can't spill. AGM batteries will even work upsidedown. The Optima Battery that many have switched to is a AGM type. The AGM part is very  The 500 CCA is very low, about on par with the cheapest of the cheap parts store ones. 800 CCA is more where it should be.

Thanks for the info on AGM batteries, Terry. So are the Optima batteries any more powerful (higher CCA)? And have they come out with a side terminal Optima yet? Seems to me that unless one was really concerned about weight savings, a battery with a bit more oomph would be the way to go, even if not stock.

So much for the theory that the battery in my new Z06 was just not charged fully at the factory. This morning I couldn't even get the doorlocks to work, let alone turn the starter. Had to open it with the key and jump the battery yet again. All this with a whopping 91 miles on the odometer.

Now I'm driving a piece of rental-Camry while the Z06 sits overnight for a diagnosis.

Enough of the griping. Here's a question that I'd like to know the answer to before I go back to the dealer to get the car. The AC/heater fan would not work this morning after I jumped the car. I was told by the dealer that this is because the car will conserve power by shutting down unnecessary electical devices when the battery/charging system is not functioning correctly. Does this sound reasonable? Or is it likely that my AC fan is also hosed?

Hutch,

The Optima has both side and top terminals to fit multiple applications. I believe they are about 800 CCA and I know they are AGM. So you get both high power and light weight. The other option is go to a Delco Professional Series battery. It will have the high power and the Delco (stock look). The trade off is a bit more weight.

Terry

1600 miles without any problems. The car sits for a week or two and so far no problems.

Thanks, Terry. I think I'll look into a red-top Optima for the Z06!
