Default Options for replacing 2001's restrictive quad cats?

Ok so I thought Magnaflow was the way to go with their high flow catted pipe and X-pipe combo. Now I am reading their pipes are 2-1/2" which seems to be industry standard as so is Borla's and Corsa's exhaust. My understanding is that the C5Z exhaust is 2-3/4". Not really convinced that 1/4" on a 400hp n/a'd car will really hold up anything horsepower wise. That being said other than Magnaflow and Random Tech, what other companies out there sell high flow catted pipes for the C5s? I want to lose the "pup" cats which were on all 2001 models as GM engineers claimed that they cost that year 5rwhp. Heck I may just take it to a shop and have them cut out and have a straight pipe welded in. I wonder if that would throw any codes? I have also read that the OEM cats are much heavier than aftermarket versions. Don't need that extra weight. The car has 42k miles on it BTW.
