Default Car Won't Start

She was running fine when I put her away. Charged the battery. Installed the battery and all I hear is click, click, click.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a battery connection, Check the cables, Also make sure the battery took a charge.

Went out to start mine today and I got NOTHING. The battery is less than a year old so I was baffled but I don't drive it all that often either. The battery test showed it was almost totally discharged so I put a quick charge on it and bingo it started right up. It hadn't been started in about a week.

Voltmeter reads 11.2 volts at the terminals. Dash lights up like a Christmas tree - ignition in 'on' position, heater came on and the engine bay light on the underside of the hood is bright and clear.

Any clues?

Engine compartment fuse box. Fuse 13 fuel pump. Fuses 18 and 22 for injectors.

Info is from your owners manual. If you need more info that is not in the OM let us know.

Oh, okay. For some reason I didn't notice those in the list.

Thanks.

11.2 seems a bit on the low side just having been taken off a charger, I would try to jump the car and see what happens.

You may have 11.2 volts for the lights, But not enough amps to crank the motor.

When you turn the key to start do the lights go dim?

Actually,I was the one who brought up the fuel injector fuses.

I mentioned them because when I had my Toyota Celica, I had the same starting/charged battery problem happen before the garage told me all that they did was replace the fuel injector fuse.

So I thought that this might be the case again.

That's what I was thinking. No matter how many times I charge the batt, the max volts I get exactly each time is 11.2/11.3. I even switched the charger to 2 amps instead of 4 amps two times that I charged it so that I would get a nice, slow and solid charge; but still, 11.2 volts. Is it possible to overcharge a battery?

Am going to take the batt to the garage to get it checked; just to make sure, before I call the auto club for a boost.

Thanks, Bill

Do you mean the headlights?

Haven't checked that. However, sounds like a good idea.

Car will not crank below about 12.0 volts.

If that is all that you could charge the battery up to, it's time for a new one..........

Why call the auto club? Just jump it yourself. The auto parts stores around here will do a load test on a battery for free and while you are there get a good set of jumper cables.

Yes Bill, I totally appreciate the advice; however the way my car sits; parked facing forward in my mom's garage against a wall on the passenger's side, it would not be worth the trouble to pull my Lexus in to her spot beside the Vette, connect the cables and struggle trying to get in on either side to start up the car.

Also, I am not going to ask my 76-year-old mother to pull my car in and attach the booster cables while I stay in the car and attempt to start it - or vice versa.

It's just easier to call the auto club. She paid for a membership. I may as well use it.

I am however going to take the battery now to get it double checked.

Thanks, Bill.

So, I go to the auto parts store to get my battery checked and the result comes back "bad cell".

However, to be 100% sure there is nothing else wrong with the car, I decide to hook up the battery from my Lexus; using jumper cables attached to it sitting on the ground and lo and behold, she eventually turns over.

Looking for a battery tomorrow.

I'm reading a lot of good things on CF about Everstart batteries at Wallyworld.

Bad Battery. Had my car on my Ctek all winter and had the same thing happen. It was off the charger for one day and did not start. Put it on the snowflake setting and it started a half hour later.

Okay, so I just got back from the stealership earlier today where I bought a new battery.. Good old AC Delco 86 PS (Professional Silver). They don't make AC Delco 6 year warranty nor 7 year warranty batteries anymore. This one is good for 30 months - 2.5 years - hmmmmmmmmmmm........

Could anyone do me a favour and call a dealer in the States and see how much this battery costs? AC Delco 86 PS (Professional Silver). Curious to know. Can't find it anywhere online.

Anyways, thankful that the failure to start was limited to a dead battery and nothing more serious.

Thanks to everyone for all of your help.
