you can squeeze many 295 30 19's or 285 30 19s on a 10 but a 305 needs an 11 or 11.5, some narrow 305s seem to go "okay" on a 10.5 but not a 10
granted I understand it's not ideal but recommended wheel width is actually 10.5 - 11.5 so we're only talking half an inch out of recommendation. "very bad idea" seems extreme to me but I'm curious why you say that? premature tire wear? dangerous condition? funny look? bad performance? all of the above…?

If you actually track a tire that doesn't take well to "over tiring" on a rim, it will overheat the bead.
the sidewall flex that would create would if anything slow you down in autocross. in fact a more narrow tire will build heat easier which is a bonus for autocross
too wide of tire not only squirms but builds heat in the bead and sidewall.
if you want more traction use a gripper compound, not a wider tire than the wheel is designed for

305's on 10.5" rims are no problem at all, usual rule of thumb is 2 over sizes on a OE rim width is alright (OE 295 oversizes 305/315)
Both examples are Hankook 305's V12's on 10.5" rims, no bulge looks OE.

Interesting you should say this. It's not actually more traction I'm after (in that sense), its the fact that I want to run Michelin PSS (which I see you mentioned further down) on my C5 and it is not offered in C5Z wheel sizes. I love the PSS so much on my C6 that I basically refuse to buy any other street tire. So I'm looking at getting into a 19/18 combo for my C5, the ones I like (centennial repops) are only available in 10" width. I could run (and may have to) 295/30 but I like the extra height of the 305/30. They offer 295/35 but that is a 27.1 inch tire which is getting pretty tall.
