Default Question on jumpstarting

Would like to know why when jump starting a car they tell
you to attach the negative cabel in the dead car to the frame
rather than to the negative battery post which is the way
we always did it years ago when my cars frequently had
dead batteries

Maybe to prevent spark at battery where acid can cause explosion?

I believe it removes the risk of creating sparks.

When I encounter a dead battery I try and push start it first. Saves a bit of aggravation with cables or if you are in a bad spot. (Assuming the car is a manual)

It's to keep spark away from battery in case any hydrogen gas has accumulated.

Hey thanks , I thought it might have to do with
that. When we were kids just hooked them up
to the battery terminals. Thanks for the input.

I have seen a battery explosion. IT IS A VERY SCARY THING INVOLVING ACID. It is also very loud, more than you would think. Luckily I was 30 feet away.

Ditto, but that was due to a wrench dropped across the terminals rather than a jump-start situation.
I'm still a bit curious how much hydrogen is being outgassed by the (presumably) dead battery at the startee end of the cables...seems like the real issue is at the other end.

Connect positive cables first. Connect neg on good battery. Connect neg on clean metal away from battery on dead battery. That's how I learned. The good battery is already connected so no chance of spark there.

In the OLD days, when you had to add water to batteries, the vent caps would release hydrogen gas. That and a spark and a possibly frozen battery can make for a BAD day. Not so much an issue these days with sealed and AGM batteries but I guess it could still be a very small possibility it could still happen.
