I sometimes am guilty of this type thing, too, but why would a member since 2000 not already have a bypass on a manual car? Several have had success by pretty violently shaking the wheel left and right with key on. (Temporarily unlocking the column.)
If it's locked with the wheels turned, are you sure that it's just not in a bind? Shake the wheel while trying the key.

No need to go to the shop.
Get the Module and the Unlocker.

OP, you thought you'd be the only one that ever escaped the column lock? Sorry, not picking on you-it's happened to all of us (unless preventive measures were taken) with 6 spd.
As was already said, charge the battery up to max before doing anything else. Mine would NOT unlock even with the bypass kit installed until immediately after I charged my battery up. After plugging in the harness on the bypass kit, I heard that familiar click/buzz from the little locking mechanism in the steering column. Problem solved, column lock bypass installed. Point is that even when you're installing the bypass, unless that finicky solenoid in the column is hit with enough voltage it will not unlock. After it unlocks, once you have the bypass, of course, it will never lock again. Good riddance.

Hundreds of threads on this issue. And highly recommend getting either the LMC 5 or the CLB installed ASAP once you get the column unlocked.
hey, pushed my luck I guess but will fix now and will have fuel shut off turned up and will replace lock plate like automatics had done by GM, all c5s didn't have this problem and I personally know of many. 10 years pretty good run but it came to an end....lol
I wouldn't replace the lock plate, I'd just unlock it and unplug it and install an LMC5. The lock plate won't matter after that. Your car, your choice. OOMV.
My battery was acting just a little strange a few weeks ago. Some weird starts. One time I got the "Wait 10 seconds then pull key" message, and I immediately thought "Oh $*(#, I know what this is leading to". Got the CLB next day'ed to me to be sure I wasn't going to have to get it towed in. So far no issues but if my battery gets stranger at least I know the car will do with a jump start and not a trip to the stealership. If you have a C5 this should be a must-have mod/preventive measure for the simple peace of mind it provides.

get the coumn lock bypass asap. in the meantime, if you vigorously turn the wheel against the locks, it may open. i did that maybe 3 times before i got the clb installed. i don't think the dealer is allowed to install the clb, you will have to buy one yourself. its easy to put in.
