Default Melted O2 Sensor Plug

The front right O2 sensor on my 'Vette is burned out right at the plug. The entire harness is FUBAR, on the car side and the sensor side. It looks like the wires go way back into the car, so it's not a simple switch-out. I wish it was just the sensor since that's a simple fix, but no joy. Anyone have any ideas how to get a replacement part for this?

Also, since this problem reared it's head, the back end has been covered in soot. I'm betting the two are tied together and that if I can fix the O2 sensor problem the back end will stay cleaner...

Ouch.. sorry you've run into such a headache!

I know there are quite a few companies out there that make custom wiring harnesses for LSX motor swaps (I had one made for my Z32-LS1 swap)... you may try reaching out to one of them to see if you can pick up a female O2 plug that you could then splice into your existing harness. (just search google for custom LS1 wiring harness). That would definitely be your cheapest option and much less of a headache than removing/installing a complete new harness.

If you do manage to get this done.. buy some heat-resistance tape (I picked some up at O'Reilly) and wrap the heck out of anything and everything near your headers that could melt from high heat!

I'd put money that getting your O2 sensor working again would fix your sooty exhaust as well.

Good luck!

You don't think splicing would mess anything up? That was my initial thought, but I don't want to make more problems for myself. Thanks for the input VPP!

Well there are two possibilities with what you may end up getting from a harness company.

You could end up getting the female O2 plug without any new wires which you would need to crimp onto your existing harness after cutting the melted plug off. It would essentially be exactly what was there before your plug melted albeit ~3/4" shorter.

The other possibility is that they send you the female plug with a few inches of wiring pre-crimped into the female plug. You'll need to cut your melted plug off anyway so all you'll need to do is match the wires and secure the new spliced plug using plenty of electrical tape (wouldn't hurt to solder the wires together).. and it should be just as it was before.

It'll only cause problems if you don't match the wires correctly or if you forget to heat shield everything once you're done. Just take plenty of before photos to guide yourself, take your time and it shouldn't be too tough

Actually just thought of this.. you could buy an O2 plug extension and use 1/2 of that to replace the melted plug. Here's a link to some Racetronix O2 Extensions

**Chicago1 beat me to it!!

no problem best bet is to call them so you get exactly what they need but they sell the gm o2 harness stuff either place you will be fine with. Good luck let us know how it goes.

Part got here Monday, spliced it in yesterday, still getting codes. Maybe something that just needs to be tuned? Not really sure where to go from here...

I don't believe those codes have anything to do with tuning. My guess is that somethiing in the splicing is wrong. Did you actually replace the 02 sensor or just splice the wires? I had a melted connector on one side and replaced it with a Bosch that was meant to be spliced in and came with the splicing connectors and a guide for the color codes of the wires. It has worked fine ever since.

I spliced the wires on the sensor side and the car side-the whole connection was melted. Weird thing is both before and after I'd get random combos of those codes. Sometimes, one, two, or all three of them.

have you replaced the O2 sensor since the repair? did you verify the wires are spliced to the correct ones on the new connector? any way to scan the sensor (hand held scanner, bluetooth w/ phone app or HP tuners, ect...)

I would just buy these for $50 shipped, just put these on last week on mine and they are high heat compared to the lower heat rated ones!

I could see if the shop has a scanner (gotta love the options in a small town). Yep I got the right part and I'm pretty darn sure all the wires got spliced right.
