I recently installed a B&M short throw shifter in my 02 Z06. The whole procedure took less than hour. I absolutely love the shifter. The first time my wife rode with me she complained about the (drive train) noise that accompanied the change. The problem originated from the B&M shifter doesn't fit snug in the hump shifter boot which allows the whine of the gears to transfer up through the opening. After reading some other threads on CF I decided to attempt muffle noise.
I went to one of the local part stores and picked up a shifter boot (made by Mr. Gasket). I also picked the smallest package of Dynamat if could find. The hole in the Mr Gasket boot was too small, however after a few minutes with a sharp knife, it fit like a charm. I then slipped the boot over the shifter ( which sat on top of the bolt on hump shifter boot). I then cut the Dynamat into narrow strips and sealed the Mr Gasket boot to the factory bolt on boot as well as the area where the shifter extends through the top of the Mr Gasket boot. Using some of the remaining Dynamat, I covered the bare metal hump. The plastic dash trim and leather boot covered everything nicely, so all was the left was the approval of my wife.
On the first trip out, she was impressed that the ride was much more quiet that had been prior to the shifter change. I wanted to thank the members of CF for the different ideas and provide my experience for anyone who may be having a similar problem.
I now wonder how the B&M shifter would feel in the C5Z. I installed the MGW in my C5Z, but I drove my 96 with the B&M shifter, and I actually like the B&M in my C4 better.

Is the B&M shifter better than the MGW?
The current MGW is better than the B&M in my opinion. The older MGW feels very similar to the B&M
As for the C4....my old 96 C4 with the Hurst shifted like butter, and felt worlds better than the C5Z trans.
I have the Hurst but removed it because of the rattle at certain loads/rpms.
The Hurst I have does not have the rubber isolator that the stock shifter does.
The B&M has the isolator.
Any rattle on the B&M?
What about the MGW?
Thanks.
I've had a Hurst, B&M and MGW and have never experienced any rattles. What shift-**** are you using? Also, is there is gasket material between the shifter and the shifter-base?
I will try this. Small strips of dynamat sounds like a good idea. My drivetrain noise is godawful because my lower shifter gasket thingy is torn. But I love my B&M Ripper shifter
