Default Failed Emissions - OBDII "Not Ready"

Arizona Emission Test, 2002 C5. The OBDII System is "Not Ready" as reported by the vehicle's on-board computer.
Does anyone know what this means? I had the battery out for a few days while installing an MP3 player. Is it possible the sensors got reset somehow and have to reacquire info?

You have to do a drive cycle.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any idea how many miles are required for a full cycle?

Usually a good 50 miles. I take my little hand held scanner, and keep checking until all systems are ready.

GENERAL MOTORS (SPECIFIC) OBD II DRIVE CYCLE
Performing a GM OBDII Driving cycle:
1. Cold Start. In order to be classified as a cold start the engine coolant temperature must be below 122°F (50°C) and within 11°F (6°C) of the ambient air temperature at startup.
Do not leave the key in prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.
2. Idle. The engine must be run for two and a half minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. The more electrical load you can apply the better. This will test the O2 heater, Passive Air, Purge "No Flow", Misfire, and - if closed loop is achieved- Fuel Trim.
3. Accelerate. Turn off the air conditioner and all the other loads and apply half throttle until 55mph (88km/hr) is reached. During this time the Misfire, Fuel Trim, and Purge Flow diagnostics will be performed.
4. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 55mph (88km/hr) for 3 minutes. During this time the O2 response, air Intrusive, EGR, Purge, Misfire, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
5. Decelerate. Let off the accelerator pedal. Do not shift, touch the brake or clutch. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 20 mph (32km/hr). During this time the EGR, Purge and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
6. Accelerate. Accelerate at 3/4 throttle until 55-60mph (88-96 km/hr). This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 3.
7. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 55mph (88km/hr) for five minutes. During this time, in addition to the diagnostics performed in step 4, the catalyst monitor diagnostics will be performed. If the catalyst is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst.
8. Decelerate. This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 5. Again, don't press the clutch or brakes or shift gears.

If the battery is disconnected you will have to go through a full drive cycle. Just drive it a little more and if it keeps happening you may have a grounding issue.

Thanks for all the replies. I had the battery out for two days, finished installing the MP3 player and then drove 15 miles to the inspection station so I think that is probably the issue.

What brand and model hand held do you have? Maybe I should get one.

Actron will show the I/M monitors. You have to get the gas tank to about 1/2 for the Evap test to run.

I'm not ready to spend $400 for something I might use only now and then. Is there a more reasonable alternative out there?

I found the Actron scanner on Amazon for $99. Where does it plug in and how difficult is it connect and use.

Just drive it a week and you should be fine.

Just under the steering column, EZ to use (read the instructions that came with it). The one in my link about is MUCH nicer and you can use it on a lot of cars.

I agree, just drive it every day for a week, you will be fine. I think following step 5 on that GM cycle stuff is dangerous so I didnt even follow the steps. I just drove it every day bringing the temps to operating range each time.

There is an Autel MS300 scanner that I found for as low as $16.95. I got mine a couple months ago on sale for $15 at Newegg and it shows I/M status.

Good luck.

In the C5 it would take approx 100 miles. Stop, turn engine off few times, and it will pass SMOG.

This happened to me back in November when I bought my Z06, it needed a battery, and needless to say the OBD test failed. Tried 70 miles, and failed drove and extra 30, and passed.

Why guess, get a handheld scanner and you'll know for SURE if your going to pass.
