Back in the day I used to really bang gears in my 68 big block with close ratio hurst! Got so good, didn't need clutch! Clutch really feels different in this C5! Can you power shift them?, you know , hold gas to floor and shift thru gears? I tried to do it from 2nd to 3rd today and I either missed 3rd an went to 5th or something, but man was there a puff of smoke and smell of burning clutch! I thought wow, that wasn't smart! Do you think my clutch is worn? car has only 12000 miles on it, but its up top on pedal if that means anything anymore. Or did I just hit 5 an not 3? Guess I wont try it again, until I hear from some of you guys that are way more up on these than I am! Thanks , Tom
so are you guys saying , it is a no no on these or what?
If you could pull a close ratio Muncie behind a big block out of first gear under full power without at least tapping the clutch, let alone catching second, you're a better man than me. As for your M6 you probably caught 5th and either hot spotted your flywheel or glazed the friction plate. How bad depends on how long you kept your foot in it. Try accelerating in fourth gear from a relatively low speed and see if the clutch slips. If it pulls the motor down you're probably OK. If the motor revs without accelerating you may have smoked the clutch. You can definitely power shift these trannys just use the clutch, you don't have to fully depress it and make sure of the gear your shifting too.
true. I can shift into gear without fully pushing the clutch. as a new c5 owner you are, just letting you know it can be very expensive to replace the clutch. just do the testing as he said. my comment earlier wasn't intented to be rude. just dry humor. we are all here to help one another on the forum. good luck!!!!

always used clutch outta first, after that, though, pretty regular! Hey thank you for the realistic an honest reply, makes sense! I did check to make sure clutch pulled ok in fourth and through gears! I got out of it immediately, so hopefully minimum damage was done! scared the crap outta me! I think I will maintain the conservative route!! Drove my 68 ill to Ca in 1969, great trip, rough ride thanks again, tom

I appreciate it, like I said, though scared the crap outta me, thot I really messed up! I will learn from this! This is a great forum1. good honest people, thanks
I power shift 1-4 when I race. I also have an aftermarket clutch, master cylinder, and built trans. It shifts like butter. I could do it on the stock but it would give me pedal issues, stuck to the floor.
Ouch, your trans is probably going to need a rebuild sir. You're asking a lot of the whole system, everything from the clutch, to the synchros and shift forks. The C5 is already world-class fast without 'power-shifting', and it will never let you down if you treat it right.
I find that in racing circles, Drag Racers whine relentlessly about the T56 being weak, while the Road Racers rarely have any issue. This is primarily because drag racing requires you to use the car in ways it was never meant to function, in order to put down the fastest time possible, whereas road racing requires smooth driving and sees little advantage in harsh moves like shifting under power. If you insist on doing this, you'll need a purpose-built race build on your trans to the tune of thousands of dollars. If you don't want to do that, use both feet when you shift...

don't think a rebuild is needed! If one missed shift on a car with 12000 miles needs a total rebuild, I wouldn't want it!! I have tested it gone from first to 4th at 35mph an car pulls fine all the way through! Just reliving my youth a bit, probably not gonna try it again. I understand what you are saying, and appreciate your input.
I mis-read your first post, the trans should be fine.
That said, a family acquaintance has always bragged about being a fast 'power-shifter' from back in the day with a Mustang or something, but he managed to destroy the T56 in a 99 Trans Am within a week of ownership, then tore the synchro keys out within 4 days of getting it back
So, some aren't such quick learners, good on you for listening to friendly criticism and advice Enjoy the car, they're amazing machines.
