had my vette for a little over a year and considering some ramps so that I can do some of my own maintenance... problem is I am a little uneasy getting under the car. After researching I ran across race ramps and for some reason I feel the ramps would be a safer option than jack stands.
So my question is anyone here using race ramps?? Opinons? I know they cost more but considering I have 3000 lbs above me if they are truly better/safer I don't mind spending the extra to get them. Also Ive read where they don't slip when pulling the car up and down the ramp which is a big deal to me as well.
I also know when doing an oil change I would need to jack up the rear.. Am wondering what the recommend jack is? I found a low profile Michelin jack at Sams club for $99 but it didnt get great reviews. Thanks Everyone.

My great wife gave me a set of race ramps for Christmas, 3 years ago. They are a very good product and I feel completely safe working under them, also I have had no problem with them sliding during initial drive on. The set I have are the 67" low profile with removable ramp. The removable ramp give you a lot more space to work after getting the vette up in the air. I highly recommend them. My 2001 C5 couple clearing the ramps by about 1 - 1 1/2" during drive on. They are slightly expensive, but worth it in my opinion. You also mentioned jacking and somewhere on this forum is a very detailed and accurate post concerning homemade jacking plates etc. I have made all the plates and use them frequently. Search for C5 jacking tips and ready yourself for a long read. Hope this info helps.
Build your own stair ramps out of 2x10 wood. My buddy trayed out his ceiling and I took the 2x10's I constructed them 7ft long and every bored stacked and nailed was 1ft shorter to 2ft an it lands on a bolster so I can pull the ramps out. Then I can just jack up the rear off the cradle with a 2x4
As stated, race ramps are highly regarded by many. Cost?
I built my own out of 2 x 10's, similar to pictured above.
When under the car, I always have it on jack stands. Also I always have the jack in place. Also, I always have at least one set of my ramps under the car not far from me. If something failed, or even earthquake or ( who knows what ), the car will not fall on me, but on the ramps.
Even when your car is on jack stands, you can stack your 2x 10 ramps under the tires, just a little less than what height your jack stands reach is.
I like redundant saftey, not just the jack stands. As I think your concern is.
Be safe, even if a little slower that way.

I have a set of 57" 2-piece Race Ramps and a pair of Trax Jax. The ramps are extremely light weight and non-skid. They make changing the oil and any maintenance task safe and easy.
To lift the rear from under the cradle I have a Larin 2-ton aluminum low profile jack. I purchased it over 9 years ago and it still works well. I also had 2 Harbor Freight 1.5-ton aluminum low profile jacks that each started leaking after 5-7 years and are both gone.
I have installed frame rails with built-in jack pads from Elite Engineering that can be used for lifting from the sides but I also use them to position jack stands under the pads in case of jack failure while I am underneath.
Get a free upgrade to the Heavy Duty version of the service ramps, or choose one free Reverse Logic chassis specific jack pad tool. The service ramps also qualify for a free pair of Race Ramps wheel chocks with mail-in factory rebate which expires on 30-jun-2014. Father's Day offer good 2-Jun-2014 through 15-Jun-2014.
