Not sure if he still sells them, but forum member BitViper used to offer a shorty antenna. That's the one I have and it looks good and works well. It is a semi-flexible rubber mast, probably about 6' - 8" long. Do a search for his name and you should be able to find some old threads where there are some pics of it.
I have the one from RPI Designs. FM stations seem to drop off at about the same distance as the original antenna. I live "in town" so I'm not pushing the limit on a daily basis. I'm happy with it.
You can always make a shorty out of the one you have...the ball comes out just use pliers and cover the ball with a rag so you dont ruin it...cut the antenna to the desired heigh then glue the ball back on

I believe the length is best cut to specific size, I'll see if I can find a reference.
By the way, I don't think Bitviper uses that screen name anymore. Try SDZ06, I think...
I got one from bitviper only a few months ago. It's not bad. Quality of actual antenna is good. And it works the same as the stock one. However you have to trim off some of the plastic on the bottom. It's not a big deal. But It really annoyed me. Because nobody talked about that and it wasn't in his description. It took a while but I got it perfect with a razor blade...
Cutting the stock one is lame. IMO.. I always rather keep the oem parts nice and stored.
Do get one fitted for GM threads. Those cheapy ebay ones suck.
