Default Trailer Hitch

Seems kind of slow here, thought I would brighten it up? I just put my bike carrier on my 99 vert to take from Dallas to Denver for the summer. Bike won't really work in a Vert if you want the top down, and unless its raining, why wouldn't you. Anyway, I have to admit, it is like an alien on the back of my car, the only good thing I can say is that it is behind me so I don't have to look at it! LOL UGLY!!!!
I guess we do what we have to do to get it done. The good part is that at least its a really nice $3000 bike.

Thanks for the post. This has been an interest of mine since I got my convertible.

When they were new , I used to see a few bikes hanging off the back of the cars, once in a while. They were all the trailer hitch type, and the bikes were always waving around out back, but it worked.

I also have a convertible, and if you managed to attach a bike rack without the tow hitch deal , let me know the particulars, please. I love riding bikes and driving to scenic places to do so.

I was kicking around here for information and didn't get anything past a trailer hitch attachment.

I might still do that, but with a trailer hitch, any hit in the rear end goes right into the frame and I wouldn't like that. In my area, a rear end collision is not super rare, because of the traffic and some drivers don't try that hard.

Some suggested to rent a bike when I got there. Not the same, plus all trailheads don't have bike shops nearby.

I suppose you went with a trailer hitch, you didn't mention the brand or type of rack.

If you don't mind, would you provide information on your buying decision, since it is up to date and working for you. I dropped out of the market some time ago, not wanting to hang attachments from the frame.

I will probably get some type of rack before I head into the Sierra gold country and Yosemite. If you managed a regular stick on type bike rack, I will definitely duplicate your path. In any event, I am still looking for a solution. I even investigated racks with giant suction cups, I really looked and couldn't get past the trailer hitch and rack solution.

I even considered modifying a rack I liked, but didn't think the trunk lid strong enough to make a safe attachment.

Thanks in advance . Any attachment details would be very useful. If I do have to drill into the frame I don't want a bunch of extra holes, and would rather learn from others experience than my own mistakes.

Not bad, but on a Vert it doesn't work. I'll have to check out the Vett club when I get back in town, Thanks Toque.
Strand Rider- There seems to be only one hitch out there, its a Curt. Its an easy install, but you need to drill 5 holes. I had to take the muffler hangers off, to make the mufflers moveable(just a bit), and a longer drill bit to reach up, and a hole cutter for one access hole. It was very easy. The hitch is hidden between the exhaust tips so its not really that noticeable. There is a you tube video showing how to do it, but you really don't need to remove the mufflers. Also, after the car is on jack stands I used my jack to hold the hitch in place and then drilled the holes instead of marking them, seemed like a better alignment set up. Then you can get whatever bike carrier you want. Depending on how far your exhaust pipes are apart, you can also get a cover up plate that will fit into the hitch to cover it up when not in use.

I think I went with the Da'lan. I have the Saris Thelma bike rack. Pretty light and easy to take on/off. Since I usually bike solo, I took off one of the bike mounts so the license plate is still visible with the rack folded up.

I use to tow a small trailer and change tires and pads at the track. I don't think I'll be doing that again but I'm considering modifying the trailer to carry kayaks.
