I have a 2002 convertible that I have had for 10 years and only has 26,000 miles. I would like to convert it from an auto to a 6 speed manual but don't know how to proceed. Does anyone have any experience with having a conversion done.......is there any downside to having it done....?
I live in a Western NC and would like to know if there are any shops close to my home who do this kind of work ?
Lots of work and money involved not worth it IMO if your car is stock and you're bored with the performance just do converter, shift kit gears and tune if you really want to shift gears I would just sell it and get a similar manual night not even cost you any more

Lots of downside. Resale value will plummet and it will cost a lot of money to convert it. Better off to sell it and get another C5 with a stick.
The only downside would be the initial investment. Resale won't plummet, and you could even put in a m12 trans in and make it quicker than a stock 6 speed c5. If you want to keep your car, do it.

Yes it will. A 2002 Vert with 26,000 miles is worth quite a bit. Changing it to a stick will destroy it's value. Who would buy one that's been converted when they can buy a good one? If he wants to keep it, fine, but he is opening a can of worms with the electronics and it may never be the same.
This might give you an idea of just what is involved if you decide to proceed with this project.
Nice writeup, lots of work involved I'd agree with the other folks who suggested just selling it and buying a manual C5. You should be able to get decent dollars for your low mile vert and could easily buy a comparable one with the manual transmission you covet.
I'm with the others stating to sell. I would never buy one I knew had a swap. I passed on a low mile 2001 that had the engine replaced at 24k. It raises a lot of questions and concerns.
Well truth be told if it's done right unless he tells a future buyer that it used to be an auto the buyer would have no reason to suspect it was ever anything but a 6 speed car. However as tempting as it is I personally wouldn't do that to a such a low mile car unless it was damaged or otherwise already devalued in someway. I love to cut things up and change them around but I just can't bring myself to do it to something that has survived in pristine condition.
If it was a rebuilt title car or something like that or had a million miles on it and I had the parts available i'd chop that S.O.B. up in a heart beat, other than that I think if it's something you really want I would sell the car and find one that is a 6 speed along with the others guys.
As for changing the resale value, I doubt it, and I doubt any one here has any real experience on what happens to the value. My 2001 Convertible was changed in the opposite direction from a 6 speed to an automatic. It took John about 2 days to do it and it has no electronic glitches. Changing the computer is not that big a deal.
If you're serious about doing this let me know, I'll get you in touch with him.
The real key lies in having someone that knows what they are doing to accomplish what you want.

Of course it's going to change the value of the car. It is no longer a pristine '02 with 26K miles. Anyone that knows anything about C5s would not buy it.

That may be true unless the buyer decides to look at the RPO listing inside the glove box lid and see that it was originally an A4 car.

Yup I know if I'm buying a Corvette especially one with low miles for top dollar I'm looking at RPO codes I would expect a conversion to be a few grand less why pay the same for a converted car as opposed to an original? These cars aren't that rare yet so finding a similar car you want isn't that hard so basically you're spending thousands to convert and the value goes the other way...

There was a Z06 that was converted to an automatic that went unsold for a very long time when I was looking. The story was the original owner wanted a Z06 auto, so when it was purchased new, it was converted before it was delivered.
But a Z06 with an auto is a niche market (I would never...). I would sell it as is and find a nice M6.
I converted my A4 to an MN12 in January. I track my car and the A4 was dying with heat. I couldn't sell it and buy a 6-speed cuz I have too much money invested in other mods on this car.
Due to the fact that I track my car, I bought very little "used" items
Overall cost:
Parts ~$6K
Labor ~$2K (My mechanic/friend gave me a great rate)
I assisted my friend and it took us 28 hours to complete.
Biggest PITA was adding the clutch pedal and wiring the two clutch switches.
I couldn't be happier with the results. It performs flawlessly on the track.
OP - I'd be happy to chat with you to provide a parts list, wiring requirements, and the needed PCM file updates.
I have a 01 and would like to have an automatic, couldn't find one when i was looking, 6 speed is fun but the older i get the less i like changing gears
Just out of interest , what other options with an auto?
I've started manually shifting my auto, and it's got a new lease of life..
Can you move shift points, or do another sort of aftermarket set up for an auto?
