On the way home from my parents house I got stopped at a light in my z. A couple of guys came up to the window and one of them asked "holy **** is that the new corvette!?!?" To which I responded "no, it's almost 15 years old." The other guy then said "that's a car I would rob a bank over, do a burnout so I can smell the wheels" word for word. Kinda surprised that he thought it was a c7, especially considering the lights were up! C5 for the win!
I always understood it before the c7 was released, but considering the c7 looks nothing like c5 or c6 it surprised me. Granted they wanted to "smell my wheels" so they may not have been very smart at all
I was asked the other day at a drive through "what kind of car is that?" I said jokingly a Ferrari expecting them to call me out and instead she said "wow a Ferrari" then the girl called another girl over and said "look at this Ferrari" she just said nice or something, I just grabbed my food and drove away laughing.

A logical assumption from the unwashed masses considering most of us try to keep our cars looking like new. I get looks of disbelief when I tell people that my car will be twelve years old in August.

Same deal for me the other day, except I said honda civic

It doesn't matter, really. Does it? He knew it was a Corvette and he knew that he liked it. Smile, thank him and be happy he didn't call it a Ferrari or somesuch thing.
I was at a charity mixed show a few months ago with a few other guys from our Corvette Club. There were no trophies, just an opportunity to show off nice cars in a nice setting with a live band, food, etc. for a good cause.
I had a guy "who knew Corvettes" argue with me for 15 minutes about MY car. He asked me what color paint I used to customize my vert. When I told him it was the original factory paint called Medium Spiral Gray Metallic and that GM produced it for the final two years of the C5 production run, he basically called me a liar in front of the other people standing there and told me I was just saying that to help sell my car. I replied that my car wasn't for sale and that my car indeed had the original GM paint. He kept telling everyone within the distance to hear is big loud mouth, that he knows Corvettes and he knows for a fact that the first production gray paint was the Cyber Gray for the ZR1 Corvette. He then pointed out my custom interior, wheels, etc. to everyone around my car that I obviously painted my car to match my other mods.
After about 15 minutes of this ***-hat spewing all types of false "Corvette expertise" and claiming that I also painted my FRCs red to try and pass my vert as a Z06 in order to raise my sale price, etc., I opened my trunk, reached into my show/detail bag and pulled out my framed original window sticker that showed the color name/code as well as the original 2004 Corvette color brochure that had a picture of a Medium Spiral Gray convertible with black interior/top (my exact car).
He then "studied" the information (like it would be false) and told me I should have shown him this information earlier. I replied that I didn't need to prove that I was telling the truth plus it was more fun listening to him talk $hit and make a complete *** out of himself!
Typical comment from someone who knows absolutely nothing about Corvettes!
Yep...
But I'm often thankful for those people... it makes the poorer Corvette people (like myself) be able to smile and feel good about our older cars in that some people think these almost 20 year old cars are new.
At my VFW Saturday, there was a function in the hall upstairs, I parked it out front with the roof off and windows down because the couple of guys on the front steps smoking said they'd be out there for a while.
When I cam out 1/2 hour later, it looked like EVERY GUY AT THE PARTY was out there, admiring "From a distance of course", the car.
The couple of LADIES in the doorway above them, did not seem happy at all....
As I started to pull out, I hit the power on the stereo, set to USB drive and Beach Boys "LITTLE DUECE COUPE" came on nice and LOUD....
The guys almost fainted... LOL Got CHEERS as I drove away....
I took my Z06 out Sunday. Nobody said anything or cared. It was a good day. I did see a Ferarri 458 at a Whataburger though, that was certainly something to see.

About 3 weeks ago while filling up at my chevron
I as well had a lady ask me if it was the new C7. I politely
explained it was a 2003 and told her some of the differences
and also told her she had skipped the entire C6 generation.
She laughed and promised when she had time she would do some
research at home. I gave her the info about the forum and
she seemed likely to look it up.

Still the worlds most unenthusiastic corvette owner I see.
On another note, took my friend out for a ride today for a few hours. Many thumbs ups, and a cell phone recording later he determined that I must be used to all the attention.
