My car is an MN6 '01 convertible with 51k miles, LTs, Cat Back, and CAI. It has an older tune on it from when the PO installed the headers. Recently it has started popping once per 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 gear shift like a backfire when cold. Once it warms up, it may pop/gurgle a little but not the backfire sound. Any ideas where to start to look for the issue? By the way, the exhaust tips run black all the time. I can clean them and within a few miles, black again.
Start here, then check your plugs if they look good then check your timing in the car. OP here sounds like the tune on the car is running more than a little RICH. But most tuners will do that with a tune on about any car...Robert
TUNE most likely but without NUMBERS we don't know he's running rich, Who knows what the state of the rest of the engine is. A clogged air filter is enough to make it run rich.

OK. Makes sense.
My GMC truck was running rich and sputtering. Cleaned the air flow sensor and it cured it. Just figured it might be his problem.

It's funny, I have the EXACT same issue ever since installing my LT headers and hi-flow cats. Now my tail pipes are dirty all the time. Many air filter was clean as was the MAF so not sure what else is going on. The only other thing I can suspect is the O2 sensors.
Thanks for the suggestions. I cleaned the MAF and TB when I got the car last June. Has had the black tip problem since owning it. The backfire when cold is something new. I'm leaning toward a rich tune since my MPG is not quite what I would expect based on my old '98.
