I agree with others... 5000 miles on a set of tires is low.
I got 10K miles on my stock Z06 good year SC's.
I got 15K miles on my Continental ContiSport 3's
I have 5K miles on my Brindgestone RE-11's and they are only down a couple 32nd's.
I got 40,000 miles out of my first set of GY run flats and still had 2 /32 all the way around before replacing them. 20,000 miles on my second set of run flats with 7/32 left before switching to non run flats. Having too much air in a tire after it heats up to operating temp can be the biggest reason for short tire life. Couple high pressure, ( some kids like to add pressure to the tires so they can break the tires free in two or three gears. Couple high pressure with a heavy foot and tires wear very quickly.

Interesting observation. My family says I act like a child so it figures that I run extra air in my tires. I have always found that the increased pressure makes the vehicle more responsive. Whether it is the mini-van, the Altima, the Maxima, or the 'Vette I have found that to be the case.
I did not get but ~15,000 miles out of the rear GY run-flats.

Putting more air pressure in a tire and calling that more air pressure a means to make the car more responsive only goes to show the lack of knowledge about physics or transfer of energy or Automotive technology.
And like I said " kids " put more air pressure in their tires so the frictional force can be diminishes so they can break the tires free. More responsive indeed. increasing the tire pressure reduces the foot print, making the center of the tread the focal point of road abrasion.
Properly maintained tire pressure is what gives you the best advantage for performance and longevity. That's why all pit crews monitor tire pressure through out races.
I've had this tire for about 8,000 miles on the Corvette, stock 275/40/18 size. They hook pretty good and the tread pattern looks pretty cool IMO. Before that I had the same tire on my 99 Z28 and they lasted 46,000 miles. I beat the **** out of those tires, many aggressive turns and a few burnouts.

was that an insult?

Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
