The Vette is packed to the brim, gassed up and ready to go. We are leaving for a 1500 mile cruise to Connecticut in a few minutes. Looks like the weather should be fine, so some top down driving looks feasible. Now all we have to worry about is road construction and distracted drivers.
I just did a 1348 mile round-trip journey in a weekend in the 'Vette, with the top off a lot. It was grueling a couple of times but mostly fun. The car ran flawlessly......and fun.
Averaged 26.4 MPG....according to the DIC. Also took my odo over the 108 K mark!
We made it to Connecticut and the only problem was gas gauge glitch. Not a big deal. Got 27 mpg for 1400 miles and gas was about $4.25. It ran 196 degrees and never got over 210. So far so good. Now if it gets us home I will be totally satisfied.
We drove ours from Indiana to Florida back in March for a week. This was our first long distance trip but we really enjoyed it. Vette ran and rode great down and back.
My Torch Red C5 is the master of the long drive. Very comfortable (actually better than my C6) and gets great mileage. I have driven it to California from Texas 2 times and not one problem.
After 10 hours of "Seat Time" we made it home today. Clocked 3109 total miles for the trip. We were almost killed twice by semi trucks near Chicago. It's was almost like Vettes are like motorcycles and they can't see us when we are close to them. Learned some lessons today. Not to mention the 60 miles of 45mph road construction leaving Chicago
The 01 ran great, but the gas gauge glitch was annoying and halfway into the trip the Service ABS, Traction control and Active Handling warnings came on. Had to reset every time I started it and had to stare at the warning lights for 1500 miles.
I used premium (mosty Sunoco) the entire trip and averaged over 26 mpg. Gas was really expensive in some places, especially Canada.
C5s are great cruisers. I drove all day and felt great.
Before we left I replaced the noisy tensioner pulley. I just went out and started it and there is a horrible whining sound. I think the idler pulley is dry and worn out now. Will investigate further tomorrow. As for the ABS light, what is the usual cause? I know the brake fluid probably hasn't been changed, I was going to do it before we left but ran out of time. Could that be the problem?
I just put on new Bridgestone Potenzas in May and they worked flawlessly. Quiet, smooth and great in the one time it rained.
Yes, the sport seats are comfortable for long trips.
C5's are road kings. Very comfortable vehicle. I may be the exception but I find the sport seats to be most comfortable. Cruise on!
They are road kings. I took a short trip (350 miles) in my 1997 C5 and talk about smooth & easy. I thought about maybe I'll just keep driving and I've had back problems.........Its a manual transmission and the speed limit was 70mph. I kept it between 65-90mph.
